Python molurus bivittatus
The Burmese Python is native throughout Southeast Asia including Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, southern China, and Indonesia. taken from http://www.komododragon.biz/PythonidaeFamilyOfSnakes

This would mean that they are not native to Aus and that you would need a exotic reptile keepers lic.
For those that want one...
If this is not correct please let me know where further info is available.

For the record of young members, sorry to spoil the joke but..

Burmese pythons are exotics, there for you CAN NOT keep them under any recreational license. Only zoos can keep exotics.

thats not a 100% true as about 7yrs ago the DSE here in vic gave out an exotic license to people that had them.
they can not breed them and most are DNA tested so if it dies you can not swap it,but they will not give out any more of those licenses to any one as i have try'd.i have been to 4 blokes homes that have burmese's,retics, african rock pythons, boa's and all different types of lizards in there herp rooms so if you ever go there any one can see them.

lucky ,lucky.

So with this reasoning snakes would be the species, elapids etc.would be the sub species and morelia would be the genis.
This is how I read all of the material on biology of species .
