Say someone attacked me. To defend myself I would either block their attack or curl up in the fetal position or whatever else would protect me or make me feel safe. If I aggressively defended myself I would kick them where-it-hurts or break their nose or other "self defense" techniques. In human society you can't go around "aggressively defending" yourself every time someone makes you feel uneasy or calls you names, but as far as the animal kingdom is concerned, if you seem to threaten to them, they'll let you know about it!

| So that would be a defensive action then.

CAN being the key word.I've had to rely on that aggression or defense to lure them out of some pretty tricky positions before, in order to catch and release. But having said that...once out and perceiving no more threat they return to their normal, alert snake behaviour. So generally they're not aggressive but can be if in need of defense. That's my opinion anyway.

Its basic logic/instinct that if you are in a confrontation you cant avoid, that killing or incapacitating your enemy is generally the best defence.
This seems to be coming down more to a differance of opinion on word usage than anything.
Aggresive behaviour even in defense is still aggresion, i was never suggesting they will attack ppl without reason. All the Eastern browns i have ever encountered on foot have sat still, left or in one case eaten a water dragon but that is because i saw them first or they could escape easily(as the can in most cases). |

There's no denying they can defend themselves well. If I had you somewhere you couldn't escape and started belting you with a shovel what would you do? I was never saying there is anything wrong with them and in many cases ppl deserve to be bitten as they have intentionally provoked the snake(not so in the above cases though)
I think we both have a different definition of 'aggressive' and 'defensive'. yep sounds like it | , |

It was very light in colour almost grey like and came from out of the storm water drain when we walked past over the grate, must have startled it or anything i wouldnt call them "Agressive" |

I think agression comes down to the snake, not the species.
