Were you feeding them enough?
I have heard of it happening but only in snakes that weren't fed enough.
I couldn't think of any other reason except she wasn't getting enough tucker.
I doubt it would have been territorial.
I'm offering a sugestion as to why it might have happened, not having a go at you.

A friend of mine keeps coastasl of different sizes together year round without a problem. He keeps a 4-5ft male in with a 6-7ft and a 7-8ft female. He feeds the females rabbits so they are never hungry.

don't quote me cos i'm a very new python owner but i've heard one of the only times they'll try and eat another python is if it still smells like the prey it has recently eaten...

Plenty of people keep 2 or more snakes together without any problem however when doing this there is always a risk that this could happen. It could be caused by any number of reasons its just something that "CAN" happen. Also just because a pair or more has been kept together for years without any problem means nothing.
If you are prepared to take the risk,no matter how small then keep them together if not one snake/one cage.

cheers M..........

Capricious....my suggestion is to take your snake to a vet and get it Xrayed ASAP.....solely because you'll always ask yourself whether it happened or not and ASAP before the evidence is digested.

I have a nasty feeling that your assumption is true and there is good evidence that several cage mates have eaten each other in the past from people far more experienced that you. It is just that certain species are not know for it and others are (BHP's being top of the list here).

A lot of people I know have 2 or more snakes together in a cage with no problems and I think that you were just unlucky.

Sorry about your loss but by posting you may have helped another newbie avoid your situation and maybe done some good out of a bad situation.

Cheers Hawkeye

I am very sorry for your loss.
Always, always keep snakes separate (except when mating).
Snakes have very primitive brains and who knows why they suddenly decide to eat another. I have heard countless horror stories of keeping snakes together which is why I house all mine separately.
If you had of asked on the forum about housing, 99% experienced people would warn you not to keep them together.
Please feel free to ask any questions you have. Some of the guys here (Paul 4 example) are a wealth of knowledge.
I am so sorry you lost a snake this way.

OK, she regurgitated him this morning. I noticed blood coming from HER vent, and there's some on the newspaper.

It dosent seem possible.....

Although it seems like the only possibility, I seriously doubt she has eaten him if there are no wounds on her. The male wouldnt have just let her eat him, its very painful and he wouldnt bit her or thrashed around or something. Was the male sick or injured? If he was he could've died and then the female ate him, which would explain the snake missing but no injuries? If he was sick or injured you shouldve isolated him in a hospital cage.

Again Capricious, very sorry to hear the news.
If there is any bleeding, a trip to the vet is a good idea. Keep us posted on your progress...

If I could take a stab in the dark at this my guess would be she passed the male through her rather than regurgitated him. This would explain the blood from her vent.I have seen a Coastal consume a mouse one day and the very next it had to be bathed due to a shedding problem. The coastal in question was placed into cold water that wasn't warmed to adequate temps.I guess the cold water shocked her because of the decrease in temperature and the food item passed out through the vent, still complete more or less apart from some blood and guts etc.It is possible that you're female consumed the male out of defense or was acting territorial etc and had no plans of digesting him but was rather fighting the only way she knows how.And that is to constrict & consume.
Just a suggestion and food for thought!

I'm just so confused. Is it really possible she could have passed him through her?
I've checked her out and there's no visible signs of bites at all.
She appears back to normal this morning, and the bleeding has stopped, would this have been a tear behind the vent??
I just don't know how such a placid and gentle thing could have done this. She was never territorial, agressive or anything, and they were both in great health, both fed well seperately etc etc.
I'll never be keeping my snakes together again, no matter how gentle they are.
Thanks for replying everyone

It is quite possible that the blood emitting from her vent is that of the males if she did infact pass him through her system.(Partly digested inside her the blood and so on could excrete from the female). However without looking at your snake I am in no position to say exactly what it is.I suggest you take it to a vet for an inspection as there could be a million and 1 possibilities in this instance.Hopefully she will be fine.
