Careing for Diamonds

Hi everyone, getting my diamond trio in a couple of days and I've got there enclosures all ready except for the lighting. Just wanted to find out what they will require for this eg do they need U.V and if so what strength, also with there heat what should it be set at at the hottest end and coldest. Also is there any other requirements they need as I've heard that you need to lower there temps compaired to other snakes, if anyone can explain this that would be great. Also in the future if I decide to breed them, do I just do with them as you would most other snakes (lower temps for breeding) or are they different. I just want to make sure I have everything perfect for them when they arrive. Thanks

this will come down to age a bit

How big is your enclosure? and how big are the snakes?

Are they all going into one enclosure or are you separating them

What is the enclosure made of ??

Diamonds are a cold weather python, and i wouldnt recommend heating at night at all, ever

In the winter you are cooling them, and it isnt needed at all otherwise

In the roof of the big enclosure ( 1200 x 1200 x 600) i have 2 18inch battens with UV tubes

where the box is located i have now installed a OZ bright mecury vapour 160 w globe, they provide plenty of heat and light.

on fittings, make sure that you use ceramic fittings and some sort of mounting base, they do get warm

I dont have any thermostat for them in this tank

This provides an excellent thermal gradient and a really hot basking area.

Diamonds like to climb, so the more vertical area you have the better, and i provide a real hot basking area, gets up to about 44 degrees.

This all runs on a timer and depending on the time of the year depends on the amount of heat/ light they get

this sort of setup works pretty much on any enclosure, you will just have to change the wattage to suit the size of the enclosure.

Well, so far I only have 3 snakes and when diamonds arrive that will make 6 so I don't really consider that a big collection. After getting my BHP which is mine, my partner wanted the jungles and now were getting the diamonds because we both love them. Other than that it will only be a girlfriend for the BHP and maybe some bredli in the future. (so not a huge collection).

There MrMagics diamonds that he had up for sale, I think (just going off memory there around 6ft). I will be putting them in seperatly, I dont' have the exact measurments but each cage is ruffly 4 1/2ft L x 4ft w x 5ft high (that's ruffly). Can diamonds go in together or like most pythons not recomended.

Diamonds are very rarely aggressive towards each other, even during the mating season so they are more suited to being housed together than other species. But there are still the other problems like feeding, disease and 'accidents', so as always, it is better to house them individually.

Thanks Mr B, i dont even want to start on the whole housing separate individual thing like the other week, that was a little crazy.

But yeah, i have kept a couple diamonds together for a couple of years now. I have had no dramas with them, they produce offspring.

Conversely, some of the other diamonds i have are housed individually, and are only together at mating time.

I havent seen any real behavioural differences.

the main gripe of having them together is feeding time can be a bit of a pain, as it takes more time.

Idividually you can chuck in a rat and leave it.

what are the enclosures made of?

Thanks for that, no the enclosures arn't outside, we have a large room under our house that is just for our reptiles, 2 are on top of one another and the other one on it's own (like I said measurments were approx but yes they are quite big ( I just can't bring myself to put snakes in a tight crampy enclosure lol I think it's cruel because of there size). I will be getting 1 male and 2 females and I'm not sure if there used to being housed together or not. I was going to house them individually but I guess if they can get along alright in the one enclosure I might think about down the track just building one large one for them, that way there will be more room under there lol (starting to seriously run out of space).

Sorry I forgot to mention what they are made off, I think hubby said it was ply wood or something like that with sliding glass fronts. Each enclosure has 2 vents (will that be enough) the vents are quite a decent size (not small).

Yeah that should be fine.

You could probably use a 100w bulb rather than the 160w.

How are you mounting them, will the light fittings etc be on the inside of the enclosure, so therefore you will need cages etc.

So exciting, new stuff

I have my diamonds here in Sydney at around 22-28 degreees. They have UV but twice a week i take all of my animals outside and let them lie in the sun for a while...they seem to love it. I also make sure there's plenty of things they can climb on.

Simone.
