Hi guys,
Just when I think I have all the various names and types of Carpet Pythons down pat, someone introduces a new one. So I thought I'd make up a spreadsheet to help myself (and others) out.
Now I need to stress that it is incomplete and only reflects the rudimentary knowledge (most of it gained from this website) of a novice at this stage.
That's where you guys come in. Please take the attached spreadsheet - modify it, add to it, subtract from it - and repost it so that those of us in the non-expert class know what the rest of you are referring to.
Thanks in advance,
Nic

Another column for etymology would be great
But a great job to start with, well done. It'll deserve a home in the wiki once complete

Why would it be of any benefit to add Etymology ?

Yeah well it probably wouldn't be much of a benefit but there's no harm in knowledge.
Etymology greatly helps with ID's, but probably wouldn't be much help with just a single genus of snakes that all look pretty dissimilar, also I doubt people just getting into reptiles/snakes would care where the origin of the name came from.
Why not etymology? I haven't seen any info on here to do with it and I find it pretty interesting myself.. maybe just deserves a seperate subject though..

This is the explanation of Etymology
"Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2,000 years ago. " from the online Etymology Dictionary
Maybe to understand some of the names of our pythons??? And the origin of their names...

If someone wants to go to the trouble of adding an etymology column, it's fine by me. Just as long as we get the other information filled in ...

How come when someone says something that is considered incorrect, there is no end of people willing to tell them how wrong they are, how superior their own knowledge is and why?
But when I ask for volunteers to contribute their extensive wisdom for the greater good of the (non-experts of the) herp community, no-one can be bothered ...

I'll most likely do that at some stage. I've already got "Keeping Carpet Pythons".
But if the answer to every question was going to be 'buy a book', then what's the point of having this forum in the first place? I thought the idea was to share information. All I want to do is produce a one-page reference guide that will be a simple source of information for those that would find it useful.
This is not the first time I've encountered this when trying to compile overview-type information. It appears as though all the so-called experts are overly-protective of their status and only willing to disseminate information when someone else gets something wrong.
Perhaps that's what I should have done - posted a deliberately incorrect opinion on a subject and then waited to get told just how wrong I was and why! Or incorporated it into a post mentioning hybrids ...
