Is there much difference between childreni, stimsoni and maculosa in terms of easy going natures. Which is better for first time handlers? |

Any of the childrens should be fine if they get a little bit of handling from when they're young, and most carpets should too. If you want a tame snake, buy a tame snake, you'll find tame individuals of all those species, so choose your favourite.

Basically I have heard that Childreni and maculosa are more snappy on average than are SA stimsoni are. I was also told that stimsoni are easier to breed. Does this seem a fair statement?

Everyone I've spoken to says maccies and children's are easy while stimson's are really tricky.

Generally childrens, maccies and stimsoni are all pretty quiet, babies can be a little snappy in their first few months though. In saying that out of all the 'childrens' I've kept I probably had more snappy stimsoni and only ever one snappy maccie. On the whole though they are all good handlers.
My advice to a first timer would be to get a blonde phase maccie. they are definately the largest growing childrens python, and probably the prettiest as well. I have four or five of them and none are snappy at all. Quote: |

| Definately not the case. Stimsoni would be by far the least prolific of the three. There is a race of stimsoni from the Mac Donell ranges around Alice Springs that simply do not breed in captivity. Myself, and plenty of other herps have had a crack at them without any luck and basically given up. However stimsoni from most other areas will breed in captivity, the Tennant Creek lineage seems to be the most common from available at the moment. | |
