Hello all,
Tonight when i had a look at my female children's python hatchling i noticed that below each eye there seemed to be an inflamation of some sort. It was not terribly big but one was bigger than the other side. I was wondering what it might possibly be. I am unable to show pictures as i left my camera at my girlfriends house. She is not eating.
My thoughts are to take her to the vet. What are your thoughts?

Hi Dan, I put a post on the Wart thread if you want to read it. If it seems inflamed it may be something different but swollen heads are not uncommon in some snakes prior to shed phase, and they return to normal after they shed. If your snake is off food ,and coming up for a shed, it could be that. I've seen it a few times, it can be disconcerting, but is nothing to worry about.
Check the gums for unusual redness or signs of infection though, and if there seems to be any evident inflammation, would be worth a visit to the vet.
Jamie.

She shed last night. Her gums are still a little puffed but only slighly. I washed her enclosure, washed her water/hiding cave and sprayed her for mites. Will be monitoring her very carefully over the next few days. Any advice would be appreciated guys

Just a thing with the mite spray - try not to use it if you haven't seen the evidence of mites. There's a lot of unnecessary use of these "harmless" chemicals, and I think this should be avoided where possible. It is usually easy to tell if the snake has mites by placing it in a white or pale pillowcase overnight or for 24 hours, then checking for them on the white fabric. They are very easy to see as moving black pinhead-sized critters and they have soft bodies which will leave a brownish smear of blood if you wipe them with your finger.
Snake mites don't just appear - they have to come from another snake or a collection you may have visited, so if you eliminate those possibilities, you won't have mites and you won't need to spray poisons around.
Jamie.
