between 200-300 it also depends because you can get "ready to go cages" which contain a water bowl, a shelter, heating and lights. what snake do you have/ or getting?

depending on where you go, around $200 - $400.. There are a few people on here who sell enclosure cheap, I'm sure they could custom make one for you. Just go look in the for sale section, there should be threads there.. Or even post a thread in the Wanted To Buy section, And also list the area that you're in.

I'm thinking of getting a Children's Python, just doing research at the moment.
That'd be great, I'll try for all of the suggestions posted. Thanks, everyone, for all your help! This is the best forum I've ever joined. |

Thanks for the quotes, I'll have to check around my local pet stores too, and save up some more dough. I'd say I'll be contacting you again sometime soon (or at least this year).
I'm in NSW, Sydney.

all my snake enclosures are glass. they are the proper ones i have brought from reptile shops, and i have never had a problem with too much heat or not enough heat. i wouldnt use like a fish tank or anything like that, but the proper ones that are designed for reptiles are great.

What's the diff between a 'proper' all glass one and a fish tank?
Auz - Just passing on what I've been told...

More questions:
1. For each a 90x60x60cm enclosure and a 60x50x50cm enclosure, how big shoud the heat mat be, or are fluoro's easier to use/control? Can a thermostat control the temperature through a mat?
2. Are long tank better than high tanks, or are high tanks better than long tanks?
Thanks for all the help so far.

For most of the Antaresia family ground space is recommended...
..with that in mind I believe longer rather than higher, will allow you to maintain a good thermal gradient that the snake is likely to use...

1. The heat mat can cover 1/3 to 1/2 of the tank's bottom, giving the snake the option to get away from the heat. Fluros do not provide heat - only light. To provide heat, a heat mat or lamp should be used. Yes thermostats control temp of mat, but make sure every now and again you check the temp yourself with thermometer, because thermostats can be a little unreliable.
2. It depends on the snake. Carpets etc will be better in higher tanks, whereas antaresia family (children's, spotteds, stimmies) will prefer (generally) longer tanks with more ground room. As aslan mentioned this helps wsith the heat gradient!
