Most of the chondros came from Indonesian localities, tha Australian ones occur only in a dot on Cape York. apart from that read Ray Hosers "Smuggled" book for an insight to the rest of them, the quantity and number of species smuggled out is incredible, especially in the early days.

To my knowledge it's illegal to import any species regardless of it's origin.

Kevyn,
Australia put a blanket ban on exporting and importing animals in the early 1970's. Apparently somebody suddenly woke up and realised that uncontrolled import and export of animals in and out of Australia could pose a serious risk to our native fauna.Up until then it was pretty much open slather with everything from big cats to primates being imported without any quarantine at all.So instead of allowing the controlled import and export all a blanket ban did was increase the demand for our native animals overseas and smuggling flourished. Some well known breeder from other countries(Casey Lazik from the US is one) even would come out here on their own collecting trips, round up as many native reptiles as possible then pack them in their suitcases and take them home. Our gecko's and monitors seemed to be the most prized animals to smuggle back home with the collectors. On the up side the rarity of our animals overseas did ensure that the smuggled ones that made it home alive were well taken care of and now good captive breeding populations of most of our native reptiles exists all over the world. Some species can even be purchased cheaper overseas than here in Australia.Recently though research institutions and zoos have been able to legally import and export reptiles but only under strict quarantine.
Most captive green pythons in Australia either originated from a breeder in Nth Queensland or progeny from animals declared in an amnesty in 1997.They are still extremely rare in collections over here hence the hefty price tag.
In the same amnesty (was in NSW only) the wildlife authority in that state went well outside their jurisdiction and issued permits to keep any exotic reptiles that were declared.Basically these permits aren't worth the paper they are written on but to date nothing has been done to properly legalise,or confiscate those exotic animals declared. | Kevyn while Rays 'Smuggled' books do provide a bit of light reading take everything in there with a pinch of salt, most of it is just tall stories with very little factual information.

Splitmore

Here's an interesting note about this particular GTP, a friend of mine posted these pictures on a American GTP site and more than 30 hits from different people all identified these pics as a Sorong animal. Definately not an Aussie but a beautiful animal regardless.
