RE: cleaning cages

i use a mix of metho 25%, detergent 5% and water to wash all surfaces of my enclosures and glass. to get a close to perfect look on the glass use metho with newspaper, then wipe over after dry with a clean rag.

A little good dishwashing liquid in water. Scrub with a white scourer & remove with a good quality squeegee(rubber edged tool used by window cleaners.) Half the time & a quarter the hassles.

If using metho, make sure you allow it to fully disapate before closing the doors as it is a known carcinogen.

I've watched a mate clean his cages with this new "enyo" product and you just use water. It's quick and simple and leaves no residue which things like metho,or windex do and is a breeze to useand the glass is spot and smearless all in one go.Am getting some myself anytime now and will be used for the glass on the enclosures and my house windows, but to give the enclosures a good clean i dilute some bleach and give everything a good scrub and wipe.I'm sure not too many germs or bacteria can handle a bleach bath

How long do you leave the enclosure to air out after metho bath or bleaching ?

I use boiling water in the bathtub, bit of disinfectant, bit of bleach, and earths choice dishwashing liquid and a bloody good scrub! Bucket of same mix for enclosure. For glass white vinigar and newspaper, comes up spotless with no streaks and no metho smells.

p.s I rinse after with fresh hot water and I sun dry the branches etc as much as possible, otherwise i let them air dry as much as possible before putting them back, humidity goes up for a few hours if not thourally dry so i dont do that with my shingle, but the rest dont mind.

A bit of research has also brought something else to my attention with regards to metho, although I have found nothing to back up it being a carcinogen so I may have been wrong there . 20000ppm or 2% ethanol in the air is considered likely to cause reproductive defects in humans. This equates to 15mL of metho in a 4x2x2. So just make sure you ventilate the cage well after using it to clean. This does not directly transfer to reptiles obviously, but worth being careful of IMO. Of course, slateys vet uses it so it must be ok

I have started using microshield hand rub to clean the enclosures themselves, I was told by a vet that is good for hygene and won't affect the herps. The enclosures are fully dried and pretty well aired by the time I put back substrate and furniture again.

Thanks for letting us know about the metho Craig.
