The hot end should be about 31 or 32, if you can check that it remains at this with the heat mat (check with a thermometer at various times over a few days), then you should be right without a thermostat (I like the peace of mind they give)...
And yeah check that the cool end is somewhere between 26 - 28ish...
If you are finding the heat mat is making it too hot, try putting some insulation between that and the substrate, a little at a time (tile, a towel, paper etc.)

i just went and bought 4 X 12 litre click clacks from bunnings.
would these be big enough to house 2 bredli's and 2 murray darlings?
and how long would they be in there for before needing a bigger enclosure? |  | | |
