I was taking my new girlfriend for a bike ride around the sugar cane - I normally ride around the cane down the wide tractor paths. They're normally short grass and clear of wildlife.
The track takes you up past the shooting range and then down beside the local creek. It is beautiful with some beautiful views over the steadily sloped land.
I normally get down to the creek and turn around and come back. But this time, with my new girlie we decided to press on in the hot humid conditions. So for the first time I had gone down this track.
And to my suprise I was so excited I saw a juvenile RBBS, absolutely stunning colours. It quickly scampered off into the cane. But while I was watching the RBBS scampering and still riding forward I saw the grass move at my feet (wheels). I steered away and the head of a black whip snake (most likely) reared up and thrashed around, I passed it quickly enough, but my girlfriend was following close and she got a very good look at this poor snake - although I am still not sure which one was more freaked out.
The snake also scampered off very quickly and I couldn't see where it went. It was easily over a metre long. And the grass was only 10-15cm deep. But I didn't see it until I was actually on top of it.
We stopped our bikes and decided that we wouldn't press on under the current conditions because the grass is too long. We cycled back.
It just makes me wonder just how many snakes am I missing and not seeing because of how well they hide.
And I would think I am living in a high snake density area. But i see so few!
Anyways, i just wanted to share the story with you - maybe you have had a close call? Or maybe a nasty bite in the wild when you came across a hidden snake?
What do you do to avoid running them over if you're cycling? Is there a good snake warning system? I'd hate to run one over
Anyways, thanks for reading. |

shouldn't really have posted this here should I because it's got nothing to do with bikes has it?
sorry | |
