Would they become tame enough to free handle like a red bellie?

Like pythons you get some that bite every chance they get and others that are great to handle. So it would be similar to elapids right?

i'm not sure how true this is, though i was told by a good experienced friend that elapids make better handlers then pythons. its just that they arn't given the chance.

Dicco,
I have never kept the black Taipans, but I have seen heaps in collections in the old days, and have seen a few in the wild as well. The Black phase Tai's are found around the Rockhampton area down towards Gympe.
I prefer the Cairns reds myself, and also like the greenish ones from Cooktown area.

You do get black phase Taipans in an area known as pigeon hill which is 8 km up the Palmerston Hwy from Innisfail. I have removed two from there myself and being black with the redish eyes they looked like satan him self personally delivered them. They are simply awesomely evil looking. I vaguely remember Big guy telling me years ago that he had seen one from the Tully area along the old wind rows. Do you remember that Bob ? Or was that Tony Gorden ?

Yes I remember seeing a very dark one at Ingham while walking along windrows . Tony thought it was a large Blacksnake and was about to jump on it. Luckerly I knew what it was and stopped him before he got tagged. From memory it was around 7 ft long. It just tunneled under the grass and then Tony stood on it. We could easily tell as the ground erupted,, and there was an almighty hiss and then a funny smell coming from Tony's pants.
