Thanks Touretts

G'day Tourett,

That depends on if you're keeping them in or out. Coastal carpets are found around the brisbane area so they can be kept outdoors successfully ( depending on where you position the outdoor enclosure). If you are keeping them indoors then their cage will need to be heated to create a thermal gradient for them. They cant be kept at room temperature even if they are local to that area.

How?

serpenttounge, how do I create a thermal gradiant if I keep them outdoors? I would have thought that the temperature would be kinder indoors. We dont use aircon.
Thanks Tourett

I am in Brisbane, and keep Coastals both inside and outside.

Outside, there is a thermal gradient...they can be out basking in the sun, or in a log in the shade. Inside, if you keep them at room temp, there is no gradient...everywhere they go will be the same. That been said, I have kept them without any heat inside...not ideal, but it works.

You want to get some heat for them...

Tourett, if you're keeping them outdoors you wont need to create a thermal gradient yourself. The snake will choose what temperature it wants to be by basking in the sun or hiding in the shade, or even spending time on the ground where it will be cooler than the top of the enclosure.

If you keep them outside just make sure they always have access to shade.

Mate, I am in Brissy as well and I have a couple inside that are next to a window. I have the cage siiting with about a quater of it in the sunlight and the rest in the shade of the curtain. It is fine and no probs at all. Just have to make sure there is good ventilation for the cage especially on those hotter days. So it is fair to say that you can set ideal conditions for them inside without heating just follows those points.
