Hi guys,
Does anyone out there have any experience with breeding the different types of Common Tree Snakes? For example ...
- Will breeding a black/grey phase with a black/grey phase result in 100% black/grey phase babies?
- What will you get if you breed a yellow-bellied blue phase with a white-bellied blue phase?
Cheers,
Nic

Very few people genuinely breed them, most of the captive produced babies come from wild-caught gravid females, and few of the babies survive to adulthood (yes, I know some do and a small number of people have bred second and possibly higher generation animals, if that's you, well done, you're rare). My guess is that some of the types (such as the spectacular black and yellow ones from north QLD) would be Mendelian, while the blues, greens, greys, etc would be polygenic ("line bred" in colloquial herp genetics jargon) and possibly also complex. I'd also be very interested to know what the situation is like, although I doubt that much at all of this information exists yet.

I don't have any Tree Snakes yet, but I'm looking at getting some in the near future.
I, like a lot of other people seem to be, am big fan of the 'true blue phase' ones with the white underside, as opposed to yellow. But I was wondering what the outcome would be if I was to breed one of each, since they can be hard to come by. And that led me to start wondering how all the other colour phases fit together ...

I know longtom has been doing it, he is one I thought of when I said "few" instead of "none". I'd be very interested to hear about the findings of people like you two. Care to share rather than just say "I've done it"?

As i know it longtom has been consistently breeding a pair he has that are yellow and blue and now produces blues, they are not wild caught,he has had the same ones for quite a while. All about hatching the juveniles out at the right temperature and patiently getting them to take pink mice,he dont use those thermostat things which is probably why they breed |

Hi TrueBlue.
I'd like to know pretty much anything you can tell me! But I'll start with the questions that were in the initial post ...
Thanks,
Nic

What do you want to know sdaji.?? | The nature of the genetics which controls the colours. I know a few people have kept and bred them, and that's enough to get the husbandry particulars sorted out, no problems there. The genetic side of things takes a larger number of animals and generations to sort out. What colours (if any) are Mendelian? If some are Mendelian, what is dominant and codominant to what? Which colours are polygenic? Etc etc. WIth the wide range of colours these snakes come in, it's sure to be a reasonably complex issue, and I have no doubt that it will be a long time yet before enough have been bred to have it sorted out, so it would be great for people to share what they do know, so we can start to scratch the surface.

i kept and bred the blue yellow throated form, they pretty much breed true to their form. some would be darker blue than others but other than that all much the same.
Hatched 22 one year.
