Hi all
I have just purchased a yearling pair of Darwins , That I have been told may breed in another 18months time if I keep the food up.My question is do I need to cool them down at winter time , or will this slow the growing process???What temperatures should I try and keep them at if there is no need for cooling ???cheers

since they will not be breeding this year dont cool them, it will slow down the growing, just feed em normally and keep temps up this winter and cool them next winter

the male more than the female will require a cooling period (brumation) to stimulate him for breeding but dont feed him during this period or play with him let him brumate but read up on proper temps and methods from other breeders before attemping this so you dont kill him. The female should brumate too if the male is but like i said it benifits the male more and talk with the breeders

The key reason for the brumation of males is for the production of sperm.
There has been some studies done on northern species regarding whether they need a cooling period to breed. due to not much actually change in environmental temperatures throughout the period.
having said that, i still cool my snakes. however, i make the cooling dependant on species, so i cool the diamonds different to the macs, which are different to the darwins, though not much.
Dont try and rush your snakes into breeding, as it could be adverse for their health.

yeah
Since diamonds are a cool weather species, i cool them different.
During the year they have no night temps and the ambient temp is what ever the house is, They only have a basking lamp which is on a 24 hour timer. Thus during summer they generally receive 13 hours of heat/ light. autumn they have 8 hrs spring they have about 11hrs and in winter only about 2-4 hrs depending on local temps
Darwins on the other hand, i utilise a basking light and heat mat for them year round. The heat mat is on a thermostat an maintains the temp at 24 and the basking light is on a timer as per diamonds .
during the winter though, i drop the heat mat to about 20 and the basking light down to only a couple of hours generally 4
Macs and coastals are much the same as the darwins but their basking light is only on for 2hrs during the winter
hope that is not convoluted
