Ive known older rats to do it if they never had babies, its kinda like cancer of the uterus or something, i havnt owned rats for years now, so its probably not the most professional answer.
Google search as i know there are veterinary files on the net somewhere, i used to use it alot if i had rat problems, as the vets here havnt got a clue.I had to tell them what injections how many ml etc.

I would say a uterus infection or if she was in early pregnancy, could have been having something similar to a miscarraige. Mice go downhill really quick and usually don't recover. Ovarian cysts and tumours could also be the cause. The likely cause is most unlikely to be transmittable, if that is your concern?
