Hi all,
I hope to try to breed my female diamond this season with a friend's two larger males. Question is what is basically the minimum size the female should be?
Just guessing she would be 6 foot long and maybe 7 inches in girth, feeds on adult rats. I plan to put her with the males, is it basically a case of if she is not big enough/ready they won't mate with her? And when should I introduce (they are kept oudoors in western sydney)?
thanks

6ft is big enough. Diamonds mate through the Winter, i'd be putting her in there now so that she can start to cool down naturally (i'm presuming she's currently kept indoors?).

yep she is indoors and has no heating on (at room temp of low 20's, possibly lower through night)

Diamonds actually mate in spring, unlike most other pythons. While you can put them together now no really need until sept/oct.

Our female laid eggs last year and she's only about 5 1/2 foot long so your girl should be fine. Ours did lay a very small clutch though so the bigger the better probably. I'm guessing you meant 7cm though instead of 7 inches girth? We put them together in mid August but didn't see any mating til mid September..whether this was cos we didn't see them doin it or cos they actually didn't do it I don't know lol. I think if you can put her outside to cool naturally that would be good but I also agree with Splitmore, I doubt you're gonna get any mating just yet!

From what I've heard thats more than big enough. I think most people put the male with the female not the other way around. Thats how it works in the wild, the male searches around for a female. I don't know if it'll make any difference though. Good luck!

female diamonds will breed at about 4 foot in length, and as above spring,(sept-october), is the hot time for diamonds to mate.

I chucked a younger male's shed in with our pair during that first month (mid Aug-mid Sept) that we didn't see any breeding...didn't do anything lol. They started when they wanted to I think!

Just a qucik question on breeding diamond pythons and maybe other forms of carpets. You have all mentioned length and circumference on the pythons, do you think weight has anything to do with it? I have a female who is at least 6ft and over 2kg, what are my chances of her breeding?
Thanks Rosemary

Diamonds are an interesting species, as they commonly form mating "groups" in the spring. If i recall correctly, males haven't been observed combating for territory or the females attention , so I would think that the scent of another male may have little effect on the mating prowess of the male courting said female!
(This is of course my opinion only, and i reserve the right to be incorrect , as I have never used a foreign slough to induce mating in any of my male diamonds). For more info, look up some of Richard Shines work.
Oh and yes, six foot is more than adequate regarding size for breeding.
Cheers Rossco.
