Yes, snakes can get too hot. If u have a big enough waterbowl, they'll spend a bit of time in that. Not sure on the side effects tho, I guess a lot like anything else that gets too hot.

As for too cold, I've got a heated hide box down the bottom of the enclosure so he's always got the choice to warm up if he wants (not that he has, he spends most of his time in the roof hide or branches)

Yep overheating can kill snakes, just as it can anything else. Because they have no internal mechanism for maintaining body temp though, they can be more susceptible to it than other creatures...
I had a friend in the states who had issues with a thermostat, heating stayed on all night in summer.. Temp's were well over 40 in the morning when he found them (basking lights etc ) and he lost 12 of his breeder corns...
