Coastal, they're easier to look after and come in a huge range of colours & patterns. They're a good choice for a first pet snake.

i have both i diamond and a coastal, and would suggest gettin a coastal as your first snake as there is a bit more involved with diamonds than coastals.
good luck and dont forget to let us know what you decide on
cheers

how much is a "bit more involved" with a diamond? It is definately the better looking of the two snakes but it is also almost double the price, which plays a fair role in my decision.

Can I ask why the trend seems to be toward the coastal?
Why are diamonds harder to look after?

I cant believe i'm going to say this but go for the coastal. They're so much more hardier than a diamond. They can tolerate temp extremes far better than a diamond, they dont need to have cold nights or cold winters in order to remain healthy or breed and will most likely live longer without any major illness' occurring. They can get larger than diamonds too, but remain fairly docile and trustworthy when being held at such a large size.
A lot of problems can arise with diamonds as they get older and it's seems that only those who've raised diamonds beyond 5-6 years tend to see these problems. You'll be heartbroken to raise a diamond to a certain age and then possibly see it wither away....

DrOsteo I can tell you why I prefer Coastals (can't speak for anyone else) One thing is that Coastals tend to be hardier animals and can handle greater temp variants easier. I find that generally (yes everyone I know there are exceptions) Coastals have a better teprament (even though they are very similar). As for colours and patterns I do have to disagree with you (each to their own of course) I think with a little research you will find that coastals have one of the largest colour variants of all Australia species. While I have to admit there are some spectaclar diamonds around I personally think there are more fantastic Coastals then there are diamonds. Just in case you are wondering I have had both and the last diamond I had and sold was a large male a little over eight and a half feet in length, He was a monster but I traded him for three other snakes which I later sold and traded for More Coastals. I have always had and will always have Coastals no matter what else I own. hey are my personal choice and this one is my favourite one of all Zeus,
