G'day everyone! I've got a 13 month old DP who's been eating full mice every second week for the past 3 months. Sometimes it's only 10 days between feeds but mostly it's about every two weeks.
She puts them away fairly easy but I'd like to start her on rats. Is this the right time to do it?? What size rats are the next step up?? I've also heard that rats are like steroids for snakes...is this true???
Cheers,
Christian
Ps - I've attached a photo just to show her proportions. I don't want an overfed, pin headed snake!! Hopefully she's not already!!

Keep feeding it the way you've been doing. If you're ready to switch to rats then offer some the same size as the mice you've been using or slightly larger. You wont see much change in growth when the animal switches to rats unless the rats are larger than it's usual feeds(it will be the size of the meals, not the fact that it's a rat). I doubt you will ever give the snake pin-head syndrome, even if you increased the size of the meal and frequency of feeds.

Try offering weaner rats or hopper rats. Some Diamonds are very hard to get onto rats. I have a 7 foot female that won't take rats, she gets 5-7 mice every 7 days. Try feeding every 7-10 days if she has heat on 24 hours a day.

I'm feeding my DP, the same age as yours on velvet rats, which weigh around 25 - 30 grams, roughly every 10 days. I had no problems getting him onto rats, he's a total guts.
She's a gorgeous looking snake Christian!
