A few pictures of peoples' Djarra Adders have gone up lately, and a friend who has seen mine suggested I take some pictures to share, so I took a couple outside today and smacked them around a bit with a camera
I saw my first Djarra Adder some years ago - a lovely wild-caught animal, and I was quite taken! I spent the next few years looking for a pair of captives which I thought were good enough, and after seeing a lot of ugly ones and a few which came close, finally found this one and her 'boyfriend'...
Some of you might remember seeing pictures of this girl as a youngster, which I posted quite excitedly just after picking her up from the airport.
She's all growed (sic) up now, and looking gorgeous
Well... her boyfriend turned out to be a girl, so I was once again on the hunt for some nice ones. A couple of lines came close last year, but again I decided to wait for something I'd be happier with, and although it means I won't be breeding them this year, I'm glad I waited for the right animals. I have three little baby ones growing up, here is one of them
Stupid twig...

I've seen some very ugly ones, some good ones, and some great ones A good Adder of any type will easily outshine an ugly one of any other.

I took those pictures this morning with a Nikon 4600, just a cheap little automatic 4MP camera.

They hide amongst leaf litter and wiggle it above to get the attention of possible prey, but it doesn't 'rattle'. When they come to investigate - LUNCH!!!!

Actually, the zoom on it is garbage and not worth using (it may be if I had a tripod... one of those things I keep meaning to get around to), but the macro function is reasonable. I really should get around to buying a decent camera... another one of those things I keep meaning to do! I still prefer the Barklies too! The Djarras are close seconds
I sort of like them being venomous, it makes them interesting, but yes, a whole new world in captivity would open up to them if they were non-venomous, and a whole new group of people would be able to enjoy them. Having said that, some types of Adders are very, very easy snakes to look after as elapids go.
I was a little concerned about birds, we get Kookaburras around here, and probably some others which would like to swoop down for a yummy addery meal, so I never got more than a couple of feet away from them. I didn't see any birds taking any interest at all, and I was keeping an eye out the whole time.

The lure is really cool! One of my favourite things about Adders They're a good example of parallel evolution (two unrelated things evolving in separate but similar areas and becoming quite similar animals/plants), they parallel vipers and do what vipers would be doing if they were here in Australia. It's common for vipers to have specialised tail tips, the rattle is probably the best known example, but some of them lure too. My guess is that vipers (or their parallels) are prone to developing specialised tail tips because they are not snakes which are often on the move, so they can afford to so something funky with their tail without as much of a worry about it getting in the way during their frequent slithering around.
When I first saw my first Djarras luring I marvelled at how differently they lure from the first Adders I had (Barklies), which prompted me getting another type (Northerns). As well as being wriggled/flicked/undulated differently, they come in different colours and slightly different shapes. My Barklies have yellow/orange lures, the Djarras have white lures and the Northerns have black lures Some wild populations have individuals with different coloured lures, some have just one colour. At first I thought that Adders were basically Adders, other than their colours and sizes. I was quite wrong! If I had unlimited space, time and money I'd like to get a lot more Adders, although there are certainly some types I wouldn't want to bother with as they're fussy feeders or sensitive and prone to health issues. At this stage I'm content with the ones I have.
