According to the ppl who conducted the Reptile Course I just went to, My DP set up is very upside down. I have a heatcord on th bottom warming one-third of the tank floor and thats been it. I did put a purple night light in but have been afraid to use it as my DP is always wrapped around it. But thats being fixed as we speak.
But Snakehandler suggested that I need to remove the heatcord all together and have no floor heating, and providing just a 25W basking lamp at the top, set on a thermostat to keep the top temp at about 26 degrees, but turned off overnight. And since my girl gets about 15mins sunlight every morning, more on weekends I don't need to have a UV light. Andi need another air vent at the bottom as well as the one I already have at the top.
My hubby is at home now changing her light to hang from top of her tank so she can't lay on it, although they reckon she can't get burnt on a 40W light but I have noticed 2 small red marks on her which looks like she has possiblty hurt herself on the sharp corner of the light cage. There's only a 2cm gap between the light cage and roof. She isn't a small snake but forces herself up onto it. Not anymore, unless she wants to hang vertical. But now I gotta treat an injury, hoping thats all it is. I am taking her along to our Herp meeting tonight for somebody to look at and hopefully tell me its nothing more serious. We didn't get into disease or injury recognition in the course I did, have to go to Victoria for their extensive course which is on our cards. I am going to go forward in leaps and bounds now with these courses to keep education up to date. Now I just need the experience to go with it |

mitchyj, Diamonds are cold weather Pythons so I would turn their heating off at night (all year long)

My enclosure is 3foot high, 3foot long and 1.5foot wide. My DP is 5.2 long. I have taken her floor heat out now & still working on the light but getting there.

Kathy, a 25w globe won't provide enough heat for your snake for about 9 months of the year and it will struggle to maintain even the basic minimum requirement of heat. Granted, true diamonds are a "cool climate" python, but they still come out to bask and can get VERY warm in a short space of time when they do this morning and afternoon in the wild. And they still need to get warm to facilitate digestion. Having a warm patch on the floor as you did is a perfectly satisfactory means of heating, as it only heated about one third of the floor, and therefore provided a good thermal gradient between warm and cool areas. The snake had a choice about where it spent it's time, and that's what you need to provide.
The weather is warming up now, but if you do feed your snake at this time of the year and we have a cool spell for a week or so, you risk the real possibility of regurgitation.
See you tomorrow.
Jamie.

Kathy
In that enclosure I would use a 60 w globe, to create a basking area of around 28deg.
on a thermostat, for around 5 to 6 hours a day.
That should be plenty, as the enclosure will hold the heat for a while.
25 watt is defiantly not enough.
In my opinion you wont need a heating mat.
I don’t like them myself, because they are designed to heat a surface instead of heating the air, which is what I prefer. When they're sitting on a heat mat in winter they may be on a warm surface but the air around them is cold which is making their bodies cold while they're trying to get warm. So in situations like that, where their bodies are getting warm from a mat but at the same time getting cold from the air, I think it's better to turn off any heat and make the snake go cold.
For a DP the heat should always be off at night anyway.

No Darwins are very different to Diamonds!
Like Newcastle is to Darwin!

I don't want to hijack your thread, but my DP born Dec 2005 is in an enclosure 900mm x 450mm x 450mm. it is setup with a uv fluro on daytime only and an Oz black ceramic 150w on a Thermo 24/7 cool end 24deg Hot end 30deg. I live in SW Vic. No floor heating. Should I be rethinking this, as it was suggested by URS. This setup gives a definate day and night cycle.

I just completed a Reptile Husbandry course by Snakehandler who are in Victoria. They told me the temp gradient for a diamond should be 26 at the hot end and 18 at the cold end - turn off all heating and lights at night time. Iam actually in a good location that my DP can happily live outdoors under normal weather conditions but I am in Mid-Northern NSW.
I actually have a 40W light in my tank, not a 25W, but I still haven't got a thermostat for the light yet so will wait till I get that set up and then up the light to 60W.
