Elapids - Venom

Heya,

Is there a time frame on when you have to get anti-ven into an envenomated [b]dog[/B?

My understanding of our snakes venom is pretty poor but I can't see why the you'd refrain from using anti-venom is a certain time period has elapsed?

If you know about this with humans then reply as well - dogs are pretty different to humans obviously but it should be similar.

As Antivenom is very expensive they will wait for symptoms to show before using. Also (for people)as it is derived from horses, some people are allergic and therefore they will not use unless it is necesary.

because you have to be sure that they have been envenomated, and it isnt a dry bite or a bite not requiring antivenom. if you are given antivenom when you dont need it, you could have an anaphylactic shock and die. so they have to be sure you have been envenomated and wait for the signs to show

You guys misunderstood.

The signs are clear that the dog was bitten, but they say it has been too long so now the dog just has to tough it out?

I'm not a scientist but that seems illogical. As long as the venom is present then it should have a positive effect, right?

Midol,

I agree with what you are saying. If the dog is showing symptoms, than the antivenom should assist in controlling them.

Like you have already stated that dogs are diff from humans and they react differently aswell. If it has been too long (do not know timeframes) the antivenom will not subside any affects of the venom. If the bite will kill the dog it would usually happen very quickly after showing signs. I had a Rotti that weighed about 60Kg that died within 15 min of being bitten by a brown snake (eastern) and was at the vets within 5 min. Antivenom was used (and cost me a fortune) and the dog died 10 min later. (vets are 2 doors down Rd).
If there are any vets on here that can correct me please do so as I am only gonig off what I was told by the vets.

The specific case I am talking about isn't mine.

But the dog took 2 days to die from memory - I just find it odd that if the venom was affecting the dog this slowly that the vet refused to use anti-venom.

I'd love to see studies which detail venom reactions in dogs from different elapids but nothing that I can find exists.
