Recently I have read alot of threads condeming all glass enclosures due to difficulty in heating. I recently purchased a display case for $20 and now I am left with the problem of keeping the heat in.
I have not began work on it as yet so is it possible to create a false base and run a heat cable through the whole base or is there a better option?
I got the display case so that my girl could have more room and I could show her off when friends came over.
All ideas will be greatly welcomed and appreciated |

I know a particular reptile shop owner here in Adelaide is dead against melamine/wood enclosures and uses glass enclosures. Last time I looked I think he was just using an infrared lamp for a basking spot in his enclosures.
Just realised you are from Adelaide, go into Scales & Tails on Prospect Road and have a look at what he does.

the way my enclosures were built for jungles is to have a raised platform with some heat mat under a sheet of glass. This means that no matter what the ambient air temp there is always a heated area that remains constant. Being all glass if you are trying to warm a whole section it might be a bit tricky but with heat mat or heat cord in a specific area it will be much easier to control. Hope this helps.

hi david yes it hepls i currently use a heat mate on a theromsat in her current enlosure. due to the length of the case should I put the thermostat probe at one end then have a hot and cold end? What would you do with this cabinet?

i have my thermostat probe directly ontop of the heated area. This way i control the temp of the hot spot and can keep it constant. The rest of the enclosure is really just whatever the ambient air temp is. Might also want to look at getting some ventilation happening in there as well.

One end has no glass in it at the moment and I was going to put ventilation in that end but not sure wether to put it high or low or how big a vent as this is my first enclosure that I have ever attempted building. Any suggestions?

you need one vent in a high position and one in the other end at a low position, you should also consider
insulating three sides if the tank to help retain heat. JMO!

why not remove the top glass sheet and put melamine chipboard there, that would increase temps a bit

That was one idea I was toying with Matthew. So beeman you think 2 vents one high tas well as one low. Might have to go with Matthews idea to achieve that as the glass in the other end is fixed.
Cheers
