Come on now, you said you were not going to use newspaper as it's "ugly"

Seriously though, you just can't beat newspaper.

newspaper is dropped in your letter box every week, what more could you want??

butchers paper is good too, but it usually comes with a cost.

Newspaper is ugly.
If this will be your first reptile than go all out on asthetics. Make the enclosure a show piece of your house. If keeping only a small collection substrates like astro-turf, marine carpet, breeders choice, different timber mulch etc will look much better than plain old boring newspaper. However once you establish a large collection newspaper has the benefits of being easier & less time consuming to clean as well as alot cheaper alternative.

depends on what snake your getting to what enclosure you should buy/build...newspaper is good as it reduces cage cleaning time, but if you have a small number of animals and your going for display there are some good substrates im sure someone can put you onto

Our first reptile was a Childreni (from Afro). He still stays in the same enlcosure and it has compressed sawdust pellets. The enclosure is ecked right out.

But we then got another snake, and another snake and so on and so on. Much cheaper to use newspaper and quiker and easier to clean. More time to play.
