Hi everyone,
I have a few questions about temperatures in a new enclosure.
Just moved my childreni from a click clack to an enclosure measuring 60cm x 30cm x 30cm. The enclosure is made from craftwood and has a glass front. For ventilation it has a 20cm x 5 cm hole in the the lid covered with fly screen. I kept the ventilation hold cutout and chopped it into 3 bits so I can put some of the bits back in to retain heat.
(Thanks for reading so far)
Now my questions...
1 How much ventilation do you think I should have in the lid and should I put some holes in the side for cross ventilation?
2 I have a heat mat under a tile at one end. The surface temperature of tile is about 29 deg C. Sound OK?
3 The cool end of the enclosure is about 20 deg C today. That sounds a little cool to me. Should I install a light or another heat mat to bring the general temperature of the enclosure up a bit?
4 There is about a 1.5cm x 7cm portion of the heat mat not covered by the tile. Is it dangerous for the snake to come in contact with or lie on this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Those temps are fine, if they dont want to go to the cool end they wont, but if they are hot, having an end of the enclosure where it is cool gives them the opportunity to get cool
All you need to do is have an area where the animal can warm up to a good temp. Depending on the species, but if i can provide a basking area of 35degrees, then i will. This allows the animal to get up to 35, if they wish which is more important after they have eaten. But then the rest of the enclosure, i dont mind it getting low, as in 15 for all i care. This gives them somewhere to go when they are warm.
Obviously you will want to ensure that there are a number of hides as well.
With regards to the heat mat, you will find most heat mats have a surface temp of around 33-36 depending on size etc. So it wont harm the snake and you will most likely find that it will try and get directly on to it. Though there is probably no dramas with it, it would be good to have it covered (better safe than sorry) even if you just use a strip of marine carpet.
Ventilation works best by having a vent high in the warm end and low in the cool end. as this will draw in the ambient air.
