just though id share with you all that a guy i work with has been keeping snakes for well over 20 years including some of the most dangerous elapids taipans browns etc a few weeks ago he came home after a night drinking took out his tiger snake which is a very plaid snake i have seen and handled it many times and well he was messing around with it and of course it tagged him on the chest he was rushed to hospital received antivenom he is ok now but the experince left him in bad shape just shows you what happens if alcohol is involved

experienced keepers should know better than to handle elapids under the influence!

i can't imagine they'd know what the smell meant, but they'd certainly notice you were handling them a lot less carefully than you usually would. Apparently there's been a few deaths over in the US the last couple of years with drunk young men handling big pythons, who eventually get sick of it and give them a good squeeze. Amazing the stupid things people will do after a couple of drinks.
