Question Feed before Shed???

G'day,

My 14 month old Diamond is due to shed in the next couple of days. Her eyes have already gone cloudy and are now clear again. The thing is, her last meal was over two weeks ago. She normally eats once a week.

Yes, I know they can go for long periods without eating but is there any problem with giving her meal now if she wants it???

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Nope, most of mine will eat before a shed, offer her the food and if she eats then your sweet.

Personally i always wait until after they have shed as their skin is fragile and having a meal now could cause it to split and make it harder for it to shed in one piece and could increase the risk of having retained scales etc.. just wait until after she's shed its alot easier IMO.

Cheers mate. I think I'll give at a run. I don't feed her in the cage so I hope she's not too cranky to come out!!

If they except the meal - give it to them.
I've found that if they feed during a shed, the shed cycle is shorter.
So its not a problem.

Only one of mine has refused a feed before a shed and he is the fussy one. All of mine accept any food in their homes!

Only problem I have had with feeding before a shed is that the skin rolls up like a condom when it hits the bump. Just means it is harder to check the eye scales, and less impessive to show your mates.

I'm still undecided!!! I'll get her out and if she's not cranky I'll feed her. I know that she'd be getting hungry and if I don't feed her tonight It won't be until I get back in a couple of days. Might be now never!!!

As long as the food source isn't too big it shouldn't be a problem, don't be surprised if she refuses to eat though as some do.

LOL i wasn't going to quite put it like that but you are so right. I had this incident once where my Woma shed about 2 hours after a feed and the skin was rolled down to the bump and was so tight. I'm sure if i had not gone in to check on her there would have been tears the next day.

Don't panic buddy, by the time she has that shed she'll be hungry and ready for her feed then.

Simone.

I have a fussy eater, who will not even look at food during a shed cycle. I prefer with all my snakes to wait until after they shed until I feed them, as an extra week or so between feeds is not going to do any harm at all.

Well, I finally got her out today after getting impatient and sure enough she started shedding right in my hands after about 10 mins of handling!! Needless to say I put her back in the cage to finish the job before I fed her.

I also decided to give her a rat for the first time which is a significant increase in size over her normal full mouse. The girth of the rat was probably double that of my DP but she got it down...much to my amazement. She's been basking ever since becuase I don't think she can fit in her hides at the moment with such a big gut!!!

Moral to the story - BE PATIENT!!!

Thanks for all the advice. No, any advice on talking the missus into a BHP next???
