Not sure what the rule of thumb is, but what is an appropriate feed size? I have been trying to find rat pups for about 3-4 weeks to feed my girl(3ft coastal) but none to be found so I got a few frozen small(2.5-3 inch long) adult rats, a bit bigger than she is used to, but have read that coastals can handle bigger prey items. She took a bit more time to take it down, but did so with no problem. I am not trying to force feed her or anything, just trying to keep my snake fed. I know that there a passionate beleifs concerning snakes and feeding, just looking for some constructive opinions and a few jokes re:Afric.

sorry if this is off topic but i was just wondering if people take their mice into the vet before they breed them.(So their offspring are ok to feed to snakes)

I have heard the rodent head should be around the same size as the head of the snake

I was told that the thickness of the prey shold be twice the thickness of the snakes thickest part.

That's about right Moses.Something that puts a nice lump in the snake.
Basically it boils down to, if the snake can get it down then it's not too big. Try the rats and if she can't get them down, then obviously she is not ready yet. She sounds big enough to eat a rat 7 to 10cm long.

Different snake is taking different size. My girl Olive is younger and her head is smaller and she eat rabbit 1,5 kg. My male olive have same size body , just biger head and no way he will eat that big prey.

20% of the snakes weight is an appropriate feed.

he wasnt asking if it was ok to breed, he was asking if it should be given a general health check to say its a healthy animal before u go feeding its offspring to ur snakes.

Freeze the offspring before feeding for 6 weeks and most of parasites and eggs should be dead.
