hey, is there anything to worry about if a female carpet python starts misjudging her aim? i feed her live mice and although she hasn't eaten in a while the last few she missed compleatly or just hit it. poor girl looked all embarased too
i'm not overly worried but i see a few feeding topics coming up so i thought i'd add to them lol
cheers
Tann

Firstly i would avoid using live mice, and get her eating dead prey.
I would say that it's something to worry about as you're feeding live prey and if the snake is a little sluggish then that could give the mouse an advantage and defend itself by attacking the snake, especially if the snake only just catches it or grabs it in the wrong place which would give the mouse an opportunity to turn and bite the snake...perhaps in it's face.
Anyway the cause of this may be that you're offering her the mice at a time when her body temp isn't optimal for striking. Perhaps you're feeding her when she's been down the cool end for a while and she's a bit slow, or also if you're feeding her early in the morning before she has basked and reached her PBT.
Make sure the snake is warm when food is offered and once again get it eating dead prey.

When i was new to the game i fed my mac live mice. One day he got the mouse on the @$$ and the mouse turned around and attacked my snake. Haven't fed live since, it is a little boring but it is safer.

I'd say if you really have to feed live get it onto pultry of some kind, like day old chicks or ducklings, that's what i do every blue moon just so my snakes keep their game thang on, little ducky's don't have big claws

Haven't fed live since | Sometimes getting bitten can turn a snake off that particular prey item for a long time. Good to see you've switched to dead prey.

Just kill them as you need them.
Then they're still warm, and you can also simulate movement by swinging it from its tail in front of her (just keep in mind if you do this she may miss and score your hand!!) Other than that, use a long stick or something so you don't have to get too close.
I'm sure you're smart enough to come up with something!
