Feeding olive hatchlings

I hatched out a clutch of olive pythons after many years of trying. I am having a little more trouble getting the neonates to start feeding than I thought I would. There are very few people in the US who have bred them so I thought it best to ask here.

Are they usually difficult to get strarted feeding?

Any experiences would be appreciated.

Nick

Yes.
Olives love to eat birds so quail are a good way to get them started.

I had huge probs trying everything with some hatchys I brought early this year.... the thing that worked best was defrosted finches , they went nuts when they frist smelled the finch.
Even tho there captive breed they still seem to love birds as there frist meal.

I have not kept olives but have read alot about them being problem feeders to start with, check out the threads Ashleigh:] started, she had heaps of trouble getting her olive to eat, from memory she had to force feed it for a while and it finally started to eat day old chickens.

i breed olives every year unless im resting them and yes they can be tricky buggers to get to fed.
Ive found that senting pink rats with day old chickens does the trick 99 percent of the time.

We use day old frozen Japanese quail then chickens. Sometimes it takes a couple of months to get them onto rodents.

`try senting the mice or rats with chickens or most other birds as does work or you can even feed them birds but i find it harder to get them off the birds than just the sented mouse or rat.

Last seasons hatchys were a bit fussy , I ended up assist feeding all of them and with in three feeds the were eating freshly killed weaner rats on a weekly basis, some of them are pushing 5 feet already, hungry bugger grow like weeds once they start.

Well done on breeding them NickM, not many people breed olives every year here as well, as stated TrueBlue does and also TroyK and Den on this site do very very well with olives.

Thanks everyone, I knew I came to the right place! I love my olives, one of the greatest pythons in my opinion.

Cheers

You could try soaking pinkie or fuzzy rats in chicken juice. Just buy half a kilo (or 1 pound) of chicken necks from the butcher/supermarket and keep the juice that collects at the bottom of the bag/container. Worked a treat for my Olive who was a reluctant feeder. She is OK with rats now, but still feeds much better when they have been soaked.

Before going for live finches (absolutely last option in my opinion), there are many other options you could try.

My Partners olive was a trouble feeder at first then all we did was feed it once with a finch then after that went to the local pet shop grabbed some finch feathers and scented the mice she didn't want it at first then got a whiff of the finch and after three feeds with finch feathers she was fine with just mice but i suppose it depends on the snake itself..
