Be careful I've heard some people that have tried to give their pythons some exotic variety foods and then can't get them back onto mice or rats.

Well it's not too hard to get feeder fish. no big deal with a small python if it stays on fish IMO. i don't see why you couldn't feed your childrens fish.

If fed entirely on fish snakes can get vit b(and other?) defeciencies which can cause seizures and death. Also saltwater fish would contain salt which some ppl think is harmful to snakes(?).

Apart from that fish are good occasional food IMO and they make snakes grow faster because they digest quicker.

The biggest problem in Qld is that you cant catch mullet under 30cm stupid laws
Most other large/medium freshwater fish are to spikey so i can only really get food for the little snakes, I use CB swordtails for that usually.

I dont imagine a fish being regurgitated would be too good for a python, and if your pythons are like most of mine there so greedy they end up eating there rodents backwards or even somtimes sideways (not easy with fins poking out like on fish).

I had a young coastal that was not feeding and the vet force fed her some feeder fish as they are small and slide in very easily. Much easier to force feed a few of these than a small rat or mice.

Potty Mullet you can catch in qld, well you use to be able to.

Why not just cut the fins of the fish.

Anything in the perch family wouldn't be suitable as the front half of the dorsal fine are hard spines.

In the rules they are just called sea mullet with no scientific name, are these the ones you commonly find in rivers? There is no mention of any other mullet species so does that mean no limits?

I have just been reading a bit and i have found that what i usually find are freshwater mullet (Myxus petardi) which arnt listed on the bag/size limits. Looks like my reptiles might be getting some fish for dinner and all this time i have been watching for fishing inspectors

I would think it's more effort than it is worth to be honest.

People have said and written that it is easier to force feed a small fish to a non feeding snake than a rat/mouse. I'm inclined to think a land python is not going to catch many fish in nature though. I have not heard of people feeding fish to a hatchling unless it is not feeding.

Are you after creating variety for your pets diet or a cheap food alternative?

I just rang DPI and they first told me that sea mullet covers all mullet and they have a 30cm min size. Then the next person said sea mullet are just one species and the others have no bag or size limit. So im thinking they are unregulated

yep, just avoid the spiny ones(or cut off the spines) and only use dead fish. Most reptiles can eat fish.
