They are not pythons and they do not eat anything like as much as pythons.
Because they do not need to thermoregulate and are fully aquatic, I'd guestimate that they eat 1/4 or less as the equivalent sized python. I'd also love to see a 2.4m one if anyone has one. Mine are about 4-5' and have bred about a year ago (before I owned them).

Yea, Pythons was a typo.
I was told by Tim N. in repchat hat he fed his on grown trout, so I assume they would be expensive to feed when compared to other snakes. I'm guessing they were fed once a week/fortnight this size meal. So would they eat as much as possible if given the chance? or could you fill a tank with fish and they will only eat when they desire?

does anyone know what sort of temprament they have? Not like you are going to pull it out every day and cuddle it, but if you need to grab it for any reason, how do they handle??

I have seen them collecting them before on tv. poor snakes!

I've always wanted to get one, but not until I have an awesome tank to set it up in

They don't like being handled, but are very "soft" out of water and it's very very rare to get bitten. You can leave them on the tiles for short periods and they escape very slowly.
I bought 35 barra fingerlings (5-7cm) back about October last year at $2 each. There's still 6 in there and i took 7 of them out at one stage. They'd be about 10-12cm long now. They've also eaten about 6 mostly grown rainbowfish in that time. That is for two adult females, the male is smaller and eats smaller fish.

"The Arafura is capable of growing to 2.5 metres in length"

I got that quote from www.arafurae.net , apparently they can get that length.

I'm not saying they can't. I'm saying if anyone keeps ones anything like that big, I'd like to see it.
Scrub pythons can grow to 8m - ever seen one that big?

Don't be fooled into thinking the Arafura is a good snake to keep.

They require regular aquarium maintenance, can have high electricity costs in the form of water heating and filtration. Food can be hard to aquire later as they get bigger and grow out of goldfish and common species. Suffer easily from stress, have a poor captive success record and aren't very good as display snakes.

But they have the most darling faces.

Their growth rate is amazing slow compared to pythons. I had one from a hatchy it tended to get fatter than longer.
Males growth rates are half that of the females that will double the size of males of the same age.
And feeding isn't an issue keep the tank well stocked with the feeder fish of choice and when the number get to around
3-5 restock it with more. Fromwhat i've witnessed they are nocternal feeders and hunters and are more active at night. And to actual get to see them feed is quite an awesome site they get quite flogged by the live fish as it makes it way to the stomach. You can see it wiggle the whole way down. Defineatly one of the more interesting species i've had the oppurtunity to own

some scumbag thought they needed it more then me and stole it along with a really colourful and well marked NT gravid childrens that we're house outside in my BBQ area being local species and ajusted to the local ambient temps, atleast they were thinking of me when they left the plain standard male for me. I reckon it was kids, lucky all the good expensive stuff is kept inside out of site and under lock & key. SInce that experience all herps are inside now.
Since then i've replaced them with stimmies for something different which i hadn't had before and couldn't be more happier.
