Talking First Ever Snake - Pics and Questions

I am attaching some pics of my son Jackson, and his (our) first snake. He is sooooo excited! He has named it "Boof". Boof was so gentle and let Jackson handle him without a problem. I snapped a few pics and then persuaded Jackson to pop him in his enclosure. As soon as we did this he went staight into a hide and hasn't come out. (It's only been 2 hours). I have a couple of Newbie questions for those full of knowledge.
1. How long should we leave him undisturbed to settle into his new environment?(Please remember I'm trying to contain the world's most excited 5 year old here!)
2. Is it OK to lift his hide to get him out or do we need to wait until he brings himself out?
and lastly 3.I don't have a thermometer yet (next pay), will it be safe to leave the heat light on constantly or should I only use it only at night -it's a 'moon glow' light?

Leave him for about a week to settle
Lifting the hide is fine, I do it all the time and Scurvy doesn't mind
Heat lamp should be OK to be left for a little while without thermostat as long as the snake has a cooler area to get away to!!!

The heat bulb is in one corner and the vent in the other. The enclosure is not huge but I'm assuming that will heat one side of the enclosure more than the other, does that sound correct? I will definately get a thermostat on Saturday.
PS it's a children's python.

Hey Lesa, any pics of the enclosure?

I wouldn't worry too much about leaving a 'moon glow' light on permanently for now as they don't give out too much heat per se, I am assuming it is one of the black lights? Also depends on how large the enclosure is and how many and how big the vents are. Also, make sure you have a cage/enclosure around the bulb, to keep the snake from burning or electrocuting itself.

Definitely let him settle for a while, at least a few days, longer if possible.

Lovely snake you've got, especially seeing as you're confident with your 5 year old handling it. Wish you all the best and I'm sure your son will love feeding it.. and snake skins are the best show and tell piece at school!!

What a gorgeous snake and your lilttle boy is going to be an amazing little herper!! I love the enthusiasm and he's sooo confident which will be great!

The only thing is (and I cant tell from the angle of your pics) but it looks like a spotted rather than children's python! Not 1005 sure from this angle but it'd be interesting to see what others think....

Thanks for sharing Leesa, very gorgeous little ones!!!

Those photo's make breeding and keeping so rewarding. It is a joy to see youngsters getting involved in the hobby.
As for the heat, if you are concerned that it maybe getting too hot? set it up on a timer. Have it on from 5am till 9am and then on again at 4pm until 9 pm. that will give him a bask to warm up for the night until morning. Hope this helps a little? It is a very difficult time for a beginner, so much information to absorb. Good luck and welcome to Herps

Here is a picture of the enclosure - which Jackson had to be in as well, the light is at the back on the left and the vent on the top on the right. There is also another pic of Boof - I was told he was a children's python, is he????

Awwww your son is just too adorable for words!!!

Well it could possibly be a childrens it's just from those angles its hard to say. If there close up pics of its head area would be better. I watched a discussion about these before as I can never really tell the difference sometimes!!
Im just going to ask one of my learned friends... hehe
