Did you build the cabinet???
Kids and animals-GREAT to see!!!!
You have a LARGE cave in the enclosure, I would have a small one, they really like a tight squeeze.
Enjoy your new little friend.

I thought the hides were too big, so I built one a low "roof" of newspaper (it's only temporary), and in the other one I have put a toilet roll that he can squeeze into - a hide within a hide so to speak. I also have a great little hollow log that we found on the weekend. I just need to wash it and bake it then I can replace the temporary box that's in there.
No I didn't build the cabinet - we acquired it from a friend who used to keep snakes. (So the price was just right!!!)
Thanks for all the advice. It's really hard to know what to do, I'm so glad I discovered this site and read heaps before we got our snake.

with the hollow log, it is a good idea to cut it in half lengthways. otherwise if the snake gos in, you cant get him out.

Hi Leesa,

Looks good. Only advice I would give you is to mount your bulbs and protective bulb cage on the ceiling of the enclosure, so it is arranged vertically. Mounting it horizontally like that will encourage your snake to use it as a climb. You will also need a heat source as that black light won't produce much heat, not enough to adequately heat the enclosure. I would be using a 100 watt ceramic for that size enclosure and definitely have it inside a protective cage, like you have done with the black light, and wire it into a thermostat.

What do you have on the front of the enclosure, is it a glass front?

Good luck woth the snake :-)

Well it could possibly be a childrens it's just from those angles its hard to say. If there close up pics of its head area would be better. I watched a discussion about these before as I can never really tell the difference sometimes!!
Im just going to ask one of my learned friends... hehe
It looks like a spotted to me too, but I really don't think it matter's much what ever it is as I'm sure it will be a great snake for your family to get an intererest into the world of reptiles.

As we scored the enclosure as a freebie we didn't have any say in the placement of the light source, but my husband has been given an old desk carol (spelling) that he is eventually going to convert into a cage for us and then we can have everything exactly as we want it. Until then, 2 questions:
1. should I put a board of some type on top of the wire cage to make a warm basking area when it is wanted?
and 2. I thought that the "moon glow" light would provide the same amount of heat as any other, obviously I was wrong so, do I need to get another bulb?

Your little fella will climb up onto the wire if he wants to bask on the light.. Weird that it's placed on the side, but I know you addressed that. Only thing I can think of (and I only skimmed this, so sorry if its been covered).. the hide and water bowl are huuugge!!! They definitely like a tighter squeeze. Wicked set up but.

We've been told that the moon lights are suficient enough for heat aswell, they onbly snake of ours that has a ceramic bulb is the stimmie and thats cause the moon lights kept blowing.... Maybe its different here on the coast cause its warmer, would like to know though cause we've just gone and brought a whole lot of moon lights as the collection is rapidly expanding... By the way your son is way cute wish i could be that brave, my partners the reptile fan and he was like that at 5 too, watch out he'll be wanting to expand his collection every birthday and christmas now...

I pinched the thermometer from the crab cage and popped it in the hot end of the enclosure, it was 32. I think that's too hot but I guess that the moonglow light heats fine. I've turned the light off to drop the temp. What temp should I aim to keep the hot end of the tank?

My maccie's hot end is around 31, and he seems just fine with it. He has a much cooler end that he can escape to no worries. As long as the snake has somewhere t cool off, 32 is no worries as he'll choose where he wants to be.

That set up seems really good, to make the hides smaller i would just put some newspaper in them. Dont worry about lifting the hide to take them out, this is usually the easiest time to catch them anyway as they wont be wrapped around a branch etc. And aslong as the cool end is cool 32 is a fine temp for the hot side.

Now I know what you all mean by a "tight squeeze". I read on this list that snakes like a roughish rock to help them shed their skin. Well I found a rock with a fairly flat edge that I thought would fit neatly up against a wall and not take up too much room. Boof has taken advantage of the 1cm of space and absolutley crammed himself in there. If he hadn't gone for a wander and then returned to the same spot I'd swear he was stuck. You can only see a tiny bit of him, if you didn't look hard you'd never know he was there. I never meant the rock to become a hide, but I guess he had other ideas.
