First python

I'm considering the purchase of my first snake(s) and I'm interested in your opinions.

I'm experienced in animal husbandry of many mammal and bird species but not snakes in particular. I want an even tempered species which will not be too hard for a beginner to handle but which I won't outgrow. I'd like something suitable for display in a nice cabinet in my lounge room and which will also be an investment should I decide to breed at some later date.

Your advice would be appreciated.

i reckon a nice jungle (dispite their rep as a snappy snake) or a bredli...but over all i would say a nice bredli for sure...be aware bredli's are slow growers but reach a decent size...

Seriously though Nagraj, I'd recommend a coastal carpet.

Nagraj, most pythons look good as display animals it just depends what looks good to you personally. By display i mean the animals look good, the enclosure itself is a different matter as pythons seem to do best in fairly sterile enclosures with newspaper or something simillar as substrate, a few branches, a water bowl, heating and that's it. A few fake plants may spruce it up a bit for smaller species but larger pythons will just crush plants and crap all over them anyway. Investment side i have no advice.

for starters i wouldn't put it in the lounge, too much traffic through the area.

Best bet is pick what you want, all snakes will bring in some $$ when they breed, depends on how much $$ you are talking about.

the bhp market is flooded, and there prices will drop over the next few seasons.
