When people say they are ‘freighting’ a snake between states, is it freight by plane or freight by train : (That might sound a bit stupid, but I was just wondering). Also, you would need to present your license when picking up the snake, wouldn’t you : Or does it depend on the state :

From what I've heard, there are not many companies that will freight reptiles anymore. I think Australian Air Express does though....
I have heard of people sending herps by bus though....

Not sure about trains but I am fairly sure they can come by road but more commonly its by plane. When we have picked up our imports from interstate no ID was needed and definately not your licence. The guys at the airport have nothing to do with wether you are licensed or not.
cheers M.......
Ps just saw Dans reply, virgin are quite happy to freight and there prices are good,ie:$28 melb to syd.

When ordering a reptile purchase you must ring your local nation parks service and get an import permit, you then give this permit number along with your reptile keepers licence number to the seller as well as home details and which local airport you wish to use, he applys for an export permit (I think! also giving hes states local national parks your import number etc) then he will freight to your state. So all details are already given and record books filled there is no need to show any details other than perhaps photo id upon picking up your shipment from the airport.

Hi there,
a little bit off the topic I know, but does freighting/travel stress the animal much? I would be guessing that you can't sedate a snake like you can a cat or dog, so would it upset them much?

Kirov Girl,
I think that sedating cannot be done safely as they are a cold blooded animal (at least not the same way as a cat and dog). From what I understand, most people transport them in a pillowcase within a padded box with air holes. Having never transported or received transported herps though, I do not know first hand. However I think I may be receiving some from SA in a little while (If I can buy the herps of course! ), so this is a topic I really want to understand.

You are right Dan,
Ours came in pillow cases inside a plastic container into which airholes had been made. The container taped well also.
Im not 100% sure of stress levels but I suspect they would stress more coming via road than by air(lot faster).
Ours settled and ate less than 24 hours after arrival so I guess they werent too bothered by the trip.
You will prolly find that by the time you get them they would be cold so getting them back to a suitable temp asap would be wise.
cheers M........
