I wouldn't ever trust feeding live. Too dangerous to your prized pet. Fresh kill, ie: just knocked on the head and dead is a good way to go for closest to live feeding. We generally always feed Ash and our newest tacker frozen.

what i dont understand is that wild snakes are always eating live prey yet you dont see them all injured and dying from eating live? is a captive bred snake just not as efficient at eating live than a wild snake? but i agree that if uve put so much time money and effort into ur pet then u wouldnt want it being hurt by some rodent, mike

IMO you have 2 variables - being room and prey.
There is not a lot of room in a viv and no room for the prey to escape as opposed to the wild. Prey will normally go for the retreat and attempt to escape. By enclosing the prey, it has no option but to defend itself tooth and nail.
With prey, we generally feed herps domesticated rats, as opposed to the normal skinks, lizards and native rodents who have little IMO in the way of aggressive defence mechanisms. Domesticated rats have had to live around humans for thousands of years and have become more cunning and a bit more nastier. it still occurs today among the homeless, where they actually attack and feed on living people.

It's actually illegal as well as being a huge risk to your snake, go the fresh kill if you can't get him to eat thawed rodents but try him on thawed first you never know it may not be a problem at all.

I have seen plenty of pythons eat live prey, it is a quick death, strike and constrict, prey is dead within 30 secs. How are the commercially prepared (frozen food) killed, usually frozen in a snap freezer, which would take a longer time for the animal to succumb. Political correctness can go too far, dont forget the rspca where planning on fining people for killing cane toads with golf clubs.

I feed my jungle freshly killed mice, its just as easy, every week i drop into the petshop, buy 2 mice, and gives me a chance to have a look around while i'm there too. Where i am its easier to buy fresh than frozen and i don't like the idea of mice next to the steak......
PS i woulsn't feed live to protect my snake, i couldn't care less how the mouse dies, freeze it, wack it, gas it, whatever, its only gonna die in the end.........
