Hey guys, i am looking at getting a snake and was pointed here for advice from a friend.
I am from Victoria and have applied for my reptile license and was just after some advice on what i need to do as i have never owned one before. I am looking at getting a children's python and was wondering when the best place to go get the enclosure set up as cheaply as possible would be? Would i be better off building my own? How big will i need the enclosure to be?
Is there anything else i should know?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards John

Hi John,
I would go to a couple of reptile shops and have a look at some vivariums. You can see how they are made then and what needs to go into them (eg. thermostate, fluro etc). From there you should see if you can make your own or not.
Some people will recommend keeping a hatchling in a small container, but I kept mine in a 2ft fish tank, but provided lots and LOTS of cover and hides, both in the warm end and the cool end, so the snake had as much choice as possible of where to hide. Just make sure you read as much info as you can, and do speak to a couple of breeders if you can find them.
When you get your new snake home, don't play with it for a couple of weeks, just let it settle in and get used to being in a new house. Maybe try and feed it after it's been home for a week.
Hope this helps

Oops , just re-read & noticed that you hadn't picked the snake yet.
If it's young , you'll need a 'click-clack' (plastic clothes storage bin) , i use a 20 litre one from woolies for $9.00 . You need a heat mat , a thermostat & a thermometre .
It's all pretty inexpensive to set -up initially . The snake will do well in that enclosure for quite a long time , being a Childrens Python , and by the time you need to upgrade the enclosure you will have gathered a lot more info .
I know there are a few herp shops in Vic .

Thank you for the replies every one, why do you need to keep them in a container first? Also can anyone recommend a pet store in Melbourne/ Geelong area, or an online store to start buying the gear from?
Also i notice alot of people have those cool looking Jungle snakes (i think there called), are they allowed on a standard license? Are they allowed in Victoria? How much do they roughly cost?

if its a hatchling you will need an escape proof plastic tub, heat mat and a thermostat microclimate mini stats are good and a thermometer. you can get most of what you need from animal attraction or the herp shop. hope that helps and good luck and have fun with your first snake if your like most of us it wont be your only one soon enough lol this hobby is an addiction |

They stay snug in their hides for a lot of the time , even now my pair
of 4 yr old childrens stay in their hides most of the time . Also in a 'tub' you can use a heat mat and don't need to set-up a whole wired light/heat system.
If you go with the plastic tub , get one that doesn't have mouldings on the bottom ---that has a flat bottom so that it sits flatly on top of the heat mat.

I think i will stick to a children's python if the Jungles get a little agro.
What will the actual snake set me back? I was really hping to get one that was black on top and white on the bottom (i have seen one before and it looked great). Also this may seem like a silly question but what the hell do you call a snake lol?

no they dont hurt when they bite, but you will have to get used to not pulling away when it bites you
as you can do damage to the snake if you do. An yes some jungles are a bit on the snappy side as
juvies but most grow out of it with age.
Go and see Matt at animal attraction he will get you started and at a reasonable price

jbourke- im getting my first snake this weekend, it will be a jungle, to answer your quetion from a newbie point of view, they dont hurt at all, i went and held a hatchling the other day and i got bitten, i can best describe the feeling as someone squeezing you with sandpaper, well thats what it felt like to me.....
good luck and go for the jungle, because even if it dont settle down by the time its big, its only a lil blood...
