Globes or heat mats?

Hey all,

Ok i was thinking of going with globes in my new enclosures that i have made but then i thought i have had heat mats since i got my first snake and i love the fact that they are easy. I would like your opinions on which is best and why.

I was thinking heat mats are better because you can get away with a $60 ministat 100 instead of one of those way more expensive dimming thermostats. Now i am not one of those people who want to take shortcuts with money and have my reps pay for it in the long run.

So what do you think?

I was told that heat mats aren't that effective for snakes as they prefer to take heat through their back not their tummy... so not to bother? But i've noticed a lot of people here use them (at least for click clacks). Anybody got an opinion? - i'd be surprised if not!

It's fine to use on/off themostats with globes, you may just have to replace them more often.

G'day Camo

Depending on what species it is, determines whether i use heat mat, or heat emitter.

I always use a basking globe and this is not conected to a thermostat it just runs on a timer the same as the fluoro.

For species that i want higher humidities, i use a heat mat, and i either run this on a timer or on a thermostat. generally they are on timers as the heat mats are only low wattage.

If i use a heat emitter though for lower humidity, i use a thermostat with those, just a pulse thermo.

It is ultimately up to the individual.

Species though will determine the best way to go.

Cheers

Can I jump on the bandwagon?
I'm getting a children's python of some sort, and I'm thinking of a glass, specially built reptile vivarium. Keepers I've asked say that they have no problems with these viv's.
I was wondering whether I should have just a heat mat under one third of the tank, or a heat mat and heat lamp, or just a heat lamp? How do you use thermostats?

Thermostats are quite simple. They just plug into the wall and regulate power to your heating device dependant on the predetermined temperature that you dail in. If you are going to use them then i recommend probe thermostats.

Its up to you with the setup... personally i use a basking lamp on a timer which runs for about 12hrs in the summer, this also controls any other daylighting.

And i use a heat mat for the night period. This is also on a timer, runs from the time the basking lamp turns off for the other 12hours.

you can alter that to use a thermostat. It is just up to each person. As i said this is what i do as this gives a day night temperature variant as well as where the temperature is ie air or ground.

Cheers

Yeah changed my name. Was looking in the mirror the other day and noticed a striking similarity, not due to the hair, just the shape of the head and the tired look.

For the MD, i would use basking lamp on a timer and a heat emitter on a thermostat for the night.

For the atherton and the macs, i would use basking lamps and heat mats. the heat mats you could run on thermostats, however if you get lower wattage ones you can just run them on timers.

Having said all that, i still run a thermostat for all my heating in one form or another. All of my basking lamps are connected to an external thermostat that measures the room ambient temperature. So i have 8 enclosures throough one thermostat. So if the room ever gets too hot, in this case 30 - 32, it turns all basking lamps off. basically just a fail safe. Not absolutely needed if you are sure your room wont get to hot, but just a fail safe.

Cheers
Hope that helps any questions just ask, owe and send me your email i can send a picture of the set up

Cheers
Dustin

Oh, and it is probably worth mentioning, we will always do good prices for the APS members, just a matter of telling us your member name and ask for a particular price one an item or items.

If you wanted a night time drop, would be alot easier to just get a mircoclimate stat with magic eye.

How much are one of those but. I have 7 enclosure that i will end up with and if they are like $200 a pop then there has to be a cheaper way.

Most are cheaper then 200, check URS site for prices. You can also use a timer and cut off heating for a certain amount of time at night to give a night time drop.

one major problem with the magic eye. most people have their herps in a room that is used for things other than just snakes, and even still its not like you are only in there during the day.

All the magic eye does is revert to a different setting once the light levels drop. But if you walk in the room and turn the room light on, then it is going to revert to the higher temperature. Conversely. What happens if the light in the room is off most of the day then you have a lower setting.

Dont get me wrong the magic eye technology is pretty cool. But it needs to be inside an enclosure that is running on a timer to start with so that the sensor only picks up the enclosure lighting and not everything else.

There you go have a look at the different thermostats

you can use a timer to simulate a night drop by having the heat off for a period in the night. but then you will have to use a globe that can be on at night and day. But yeah it is an option

Yeah, dont know how true this is but the key reason for the different heat types is to do with humidity control more than anything.
