heart disease

had more x-rays and ultrasound on thursday and heart disease has been confirmed in my favorite tiger.
i don't know how long he has but it was not even visible a month ago to a massive swelling now so i don't think it will be long. not quite six years old yet so it's a bit hard to take.
he has been the perfect patient when doing the x-rays and ultrasound.

Just keeping a real close eye on him to establish if and when it starts really bothering him. It does not seem to be painful and massaging or simply touching the lump does not seem to bother him much at the moment.
If i was to be selfish I'd like him to just die peacefully in his sleep one night, save me having to do it.

Hey Baxtor is there any idea what may have caused it or was it just heriditary? (excuse spelling)

I asked for opinions from several herp vets as well as the one I took him to and they all said the same thing,"The condition is not associated with any cause and effect. It just happens"
So it's just the luck of the draw.

baxtor,

I have seen a similar situation with a Coastal Taipan. The technical term is right on the tip of my lung, but it's basically swelling of the heart. The condition went as quick as it came, and as far as I know the snake is still alive.

jonno, I certainly hope that will be the case but I doubt it. It just keeps getting larger. The term my vet used was cardiomyopathy. The ultrasound showed one of the chambers of the heart which is normally slightly larger than another to be much bigger. The vet seemed to think this indicated a valve problem which allowed a back flow of blood leading to the swelling.

That's exactly the term I was looking for. I think the case I was involved with was the exception rather than the norm, unfortunately.

"Banjo" started gaping costantly and twisting his head early this evening and was showing signs of obvious distress.
The heart had swollen to massive size which was also impacting on his lungs.
I have put him down. I knew it would be a hard thing to do but harder to watch him suffer, it's been a long time since I had tears in my eyes.
