Question Heating new enclosure

Hi All,

I picked up my lil Bredli over the weekend and the enclosure will get to around 30degrees during the day but drops down to around 25 at night. I have 2x 40watt red party bulbs on a dimming thermostat but it never seems to turn them off as they are not getting to 30.

I got a heat mat today that I wanted to put in the bottom of the enclosure however I need to cut the cable to get it through the small hole, and I don't want to do that just yet. Can you get 60watt red party bulbs? I was only able to find the yellow 60watt bulbs for scaring away mozzies, are these safe to use?

What is my best bet to keep the enclosure at the right temp? It is made from white MDF board and has a glass front. Any help would be awesome.

I've never used a dimming thermostat, so I wouldn't know about that.

Although, it's probably not dimming because the wattage isn't high enough. Not sure on the higher wattages for the particular globes that you want, but you can probably get some reflector globes that are at a higher wattage from a hardware store.

When you've gotten a higher wattage globe, crank up the thermostat for a day or so and see if that works. Often it's touch and go, and needs to have some fiddling before you can get a good setting that works.

Hey Trav, just a suggestion instead of cutting cord what about cutting with a hole saw 25mm, remove 25mm cut out and drill a 8mm hole in the centre. Then put wood in a vice and gently saw a cut from outside to the internal hole, with a wood file make the groove wide enough to slide the cable down into 8mm hole then wood glue the 25mm hole back in place. I dont know of your electrical knowledge so hopefully this helps.
With the lights why dont you get a dedicated reptile heat globe like a 60watt night( purple)or similar, Check out Animal attraction link i get mine from there. Regards

I purchased a heat mat and cut the cord and placed this in the enclosure under the lights with the probe on top on off the news paper im using to cover the bottom of the enclosure. The thermostat is now switching off and when i measure the temp it is saying it is 33.2 degrees at the probe and 34.8 on top of the paper. The cool end is around 26 degrees. Are these temps going to be OK or should I lower them slightly.

It (having snake sexed this weekend) seems to be very active and likes to investigate everything when i get it out of the enclosure, does not seem scared or freaked out at all. Very very easy to handle, he came into work with me yesterday as i had a house inspection (SHHHHH no pets allowed at home) and he was happy in a click clack i knocked up the night before. He was handled by 6 or 7 people, did not strike or get scared at all.

Im very happy with the progress and Im intendng on giving it a feed tonight, its first feeding under my care. Yay exciting.

Hi Trav,

I'm currently using a 75 watt Oz Purple Night Heat & Light Globe and it's heating the enclosure up nicely to around 30 degrees.

Make sure you don't try and handle your little one for a few days after you feed it, cause they like to be left alone to digest their food. I don't even attempt to pic up Kiandra until 3 days have passed since I gave her a fuzizie cause she becomes very anti-social. I've fed her twice now and both times she's gobbled it up within a minute or two. Now I'm just waiting for her first shed.

Let us know how he/she goes with her first feed from you.

Yep, that's all I use. I have a large hide right underneath it and Kiandra loves to lie on that to warm herself. She also has a smaller hide in the cooler part of the enclosure and she uses that quite a bit as well.

Luckily I have a metal cage around the light which doesn't get very warm cause the other day, I found her partly wrapped around the bottom of it. She was mainly wrapped around the thermometer on the glass front but her head and maybe 3-4 inches of body were on the cage itself. It scared the bejebbers out of me so much that I flung the lid up and she dropped to the floor of the enclosure.

It's 24" wide x 18" deep x 18" high. Since taking this pic, I've bought a digital thermometer that sticks to the outside of the enclosure and just a probe sits inside.

Here's a pic.

I don't mind the questions....ask as many as you want, it's the only way to really learn.

You can see it more clearly in this pic. I use a fine pine bark on the floor and with the new hides and a fake plant, it looks really good now. I have a fake rock background as well but I can't put that in at the moment cause she's able to get in behind it.
