Breeders choice doesn't do ANYTHING better than newspaper. You're better off using thick layers of newspaper as a substrate. It will keep the heat in. Really thick layers of newspaper will create better insulation and the snake will love getting under it.

I also wouldn't listen to any advice given by petshops. They're shockers!!

hahaha, your right on the money zuluworrior and serpentounge.
Infact the point that serpentounge made is excelent as newspaper is a far better insulator than breeders choice, if a few layers are used. So much so that i dont even bother with nesting boxes anymore as if enough layers of paper are used,( 20-30 layers), when the animal is gravid, they will almost always lay under the paper rather than the nest box. For the rest of the year i use at least 10 or more layers and they perfer this to hide boxes.
I must add though that you need to lay a couple of layers flat on the floor of the tank that they cant get under to stop eggs sticking, its then very easy to also remove the eggs with out any mishaps.

If you dont like the look of newspaper use butchers paper, same stuff but just dosnt give your snakes anything to read when they get bored.

I think breeders choice also sucks all the moisture out of the animal when it is sitting on it. I have noticed at work one of the staff there put it in the blue tongue enclosure and I have noticed they are drinking more water now.

Is there a problem with fake drass or outdoor carpet ? We use it and i put 2 or 3 layers of paper under it so as to compensate for and water spills or the like. We have 2 bits for each cage and do the rotational thing when ever we have to. Works for us. Matt

Matty007 fake grass is fine. I personally use newspaper and like what has been stated early, it's all about personal husbandary. The issue with breeders choice is it can have disartious ??? effects if swallowed and from experience results in death as it expands internally.
Hopefully it won't happen in this cause as losing an animal is not the result anyone wants.
But due to what i've experienced when i was less experienced i wouldn't recommend the stuff

That's why I don't use kitty litter. It is BAD. Just use news paper, safer, easier and cleaner.

Anyway I know its only been a day but how is your BHP going Christian75. Hope he comes through this with no dramas as he is a real beauty, and such a character trying to chew on the plate!

I keep 100s of animals ( Anteresias and hatchoes) on Breeders Choice and to my knowledge have never lost one from ingesting it. They are all fed wet rodents in the cage on breeders choice.

I was surprised that Snake-Ranch uses BC in their hatchy boxes. Go figure!

Col J, I dont know if you were implying I am posting on behalf of Snake Ranch? I am not. I no longer have any involvement with Snake Ranch as I left to do my own thing but SR did use Breeder Choice in with hatchoes and many growing snakes without complication when I was there.

Woah back there Wokka. I wasn't implying anything & I didn't know you had any involvement with SR.

I was just a little surprised to see that they use it when so many keepers (myself included) avoid using it for terrestrial species. I have used it & had no problems with sloughing due to dryness or ingestion problems, but can imagine how it might be ingested. Obviously SR doesn't have too many problems with it or they wouldn't use it.

I still use it in my DP cage, but they rarely ever touch the substrate & are fed on their perches. Everything else has Newspaper or Astro-turf.

Christian75: I am sure a 14 mth BHP will pass it no worries. Good luck with it!

What surprised you? The fact that so many members talk crap about substrate? BC and the like is an excellent substrate, easily the healthiest and convenient option available when used correctly.
