I remember in the 90s Auckland central was nearly shut down because they found a 'snake skin' near the wharf. Turned out it was part of a fancy dress costume. Though it was a real snake skin, there was never a snake to be found.

NZ has had its fair share of bio-security scares from scorpians through to toads. But a snake would absolutely devastate the bird life if it could adapt to the climatic conditions.

But a sea snake - pfffft.... just another thing to catch in the ocean!

Not suprising at all, those particular sea snakes are found in cooler waters as well as tropical seas.

Its not the 1st thats been washed up at home in nz
theres been quite a few in auckland, ones being kept in an aquarium there
and they occasionaly are found up north around the corriamndel apparently
Also there was a scare not too long ago when a cobra head was found in Hawkes Bay!
I hear all the stories about exotic species of snakes here, mainly the corns, and i think its probly only a matter of time in nz, if they can get them into Aus, they could easily get them into NZ
