Het albino

Just wondering when a snake is advertised as a het albino how can you tell, as a het snake carrying the albino gene will not have any outward characteristics of albinoism... so do you have to take the sellers word for it also how does a seller tell the difference between a het and one that does not carried the desired gene from the same clutch as technically they would look the same..

Their is no way to really tell in other words u need to trust the seller. If the clutch has one albino paret u can be garanteed all the ofsprings will either be albino or het. A het cross het will not produce any 100% hets.

thanks for the info someone posted a while ago that a het cross normal will have 25% het 75% normal , het cross albino 50% albino 50% het , albino cross normal 50% het 50% normal so if the parents are both het your money is safe , i asked becouse of the huge $$$$ asked for hets when it seems a bit of a gamble worth checking out the breeder and snakes origins before buying a het..

hetxhet = 50%het+25%albino+25%normal. What are you after, olive or darwin? for olive try gavin bedford or snake ranch, for darwins go with simon stone

Bottom line is you have to trust the breeder of the hets.

In response to grimbeny, actually a 100% het albino cross 100% het albino will produce some 100% hets. When bred together 25% of the clutch should be albino, of the remaining ...66 and 2 thirds are 100% hets and the rest ...33 and a third are normal. Because normals and 100% albino hets look the same , before being proven they are sold as 66% possible het albinos. But once you breed the 66% possible het albinos back to an albino you should be able to tell if they are hets or not from the offspring. Sorry, probably confused everybody even more!

if the parents are both het, then ur money wont be safe, it'll produce 50% het, 25% normal and 25% albino. safest is goin with albino cross normal or albino cross het, coz all normal looking offspring will be het.

possible hets are very cheap so its not a huge deal if it turns out to be normal.

Your numbers are a bit out there mate -

albino x albino = 100% albino
albino x het = 50% albino 50% het
albino x normal = 100% het
het x het = 25% albino 50% het 25% normal
het x normal = 50% het 50% normal

The offspring from an albino x normal or albino x het will all be definite hets (if not albinos) so they are worth the money. It's when you breed het x het and het x normal you have a number of het and normal offsrping that you cannot tell apart. So you purchase them at a cheaper price then a guaranteed het, but you also take the mathematical risk of them being just a standard animal.

Sure hets will be produced but you cannot tell wether they are hets(unless you breed them with an albino ofcourse) theirfor they wont be 100% hets

But few of these percentages are always correct in reality they are just a rough average of what could happen so an albino x het can throw 100% albino babies or 100% hets depending on the split of the genes but the odds on this would be huge. Nature just does this stuff to start arguments.
They can do genetic testing to tell 100% if the normal looking snake is het for albino or not but the price would be huge and if they haven't worked out which gene it's on, I'm sure they could but the price just went higher to develop it. The science is there but is it worth it? Roll the dice and place your bets, with the amount of albino's around the price of possible hets will soon drop and you could end up with a bargain or not.

I have some 100% hets here guaranteed. It isnt too difficult to ask around to see if anyone selling hets is above board or not.Hets are a lot cheaper than albinos and for keepers who are short of funds they are an excellent way to get albinos.

This subject always causes confusion its all a matter of probabilities & luck, check out the NERD web site below for a simple explanation of genetics etc
