| | | Hibernating (brumate) a Diamond Python
Hey guys, I've looked through a number of threads regarding this topic and seem to be getting too many different responses.
My diamond python is 3 years old, winter is coming up and i want to brumate it. I live in Sydney, so temp doesn't get too cold in winter, my house is not heated. Do I give him his last feed, let it go through......then slowly decrease the heat and just leave it off till mid August or so? Does he still need heat? Food? A box or something to hide in? Or can I just leave him alone for this time?
Hopefully someone can clear this up for me, as I don't want to damage his health in any way.
Thank you!
- Shurik

Yep, feed as you said, just have heat/basking spot during the day, after decreasing temps. No food & provide a hide.

I stop feeding my Diamonds from around May till Sept. Still provide a basking spot of around 32deg, just reduce the time of day its on - eg April 4hrs, May 3hrs, June & July 2hrs, August 3hrs, September 4hrs.

Thanks guys.
So from what I've gathered eventually just switching off the heater and leaving him there for the 2-3 months isnt a good idea. I thought the whole idea was that they are in cold, so they dont eat and just lie there, relaxed, sleeping.

I would suggest that most pythons brumate at a year old (i.e. the don't brumate in their first Winter). It has also been suggested that diamonds be brumated regardless of breeding intention.

i think diamonds need to brumate regardless of mating aswell, otherwise they live they full life span in half the time, hence, 6 year syndrome

You will end up killing your diamond if you try keeping it long term at 32... You will not notice short term what those temps are doing but your python will suffer long term.

I have also heard that during winter the basking spot should be put up a few degrees to make up for the colder nights, so I dont see a problem with 32 when its only going to be a few hours bask every day.

Remember that diamonds require much colder temperatures then every other python. There's no reason to need to make up for the colder nights- they require VERY cold temperatures in Winter. I'd use the Summer regime if it were my diamond. That is, basking spot at 28* during the day until 12, then off until dawn the next morning. It will still be very cold for them, because ambient temperatures are colder than Summer (which is obvious).

The basking spot doesis around that though it does get a little hotter depending on room temperature. Night time room temp at the moment is 13c.

It annoys me that people use similar temperatures for diamonds compared to coastals, with insulated enclosures, and then wonder why their diamond got sick and died.
