We are still in the process of setting up our enclosure ready for our first snake. I have a hide on the warm side of the enclosure and another on the cool side. Now we would like to build a "high" hide. What we are planning to do is but a permanent shelf the length of the enclosure directly underneath the beam at the front of the enclosure that supports the roof. (does that make sense?) Our enclosure opens from the top so that is the only place to put it where the snake won't be disturbed if we open the lid.
HOWEVER this means if the snake wants to stay put, there is no way we can get it out, it'll have to stay there till it's ready to emerge. Is this a good idea? It means when it is stressed or needs some "alone time", it will have a plave to go. If it is up there we can still easily clean the floor of the cage. BUT I can also see downsides.
Advice please???

I agree with PhilK. Even if the top of the hide could slide off.

Advice/question from another newbie - why do you want/need more than one hide? We've got a hide, a hollow log, a branch and a plastic plant. Our Jake goes into his hide for about a day at a time (which sucks for us, but on the up side, he doesn't go in as often as he did when we first got him). The rest of the time he can coil up in the log, loll (yes, he doesn't lol much) along the branch, soak in his water bowl or hide behind the greenery.

Crystal - I think it's like, the more hides you have, the more secure your snake will feel, so the more you will see it out and about.

It also gives the snake a chance to choice what heat to hide in being that there is one on the hot side and one on the cold side

Yes that's right. I wanted a number of hides when we get the snake to make it feel more secure. One of them is only a cardboard box which I am planning to get rid of when it feels more at home. That will leave us with 2 that we can keep at different temps.

I wouldn't recommend having any hides in which the snake cannot be removed if required. A sick snake is likely to hide and if it chooses that hide you will not be able to get it out and by the time you realise it is hiding because it is sick it may be too late.
Also as already mentioned some snakes like to foul their hides, you'll want to be able to get into them easily for cleaning.

At the time this poor blonde didn't take into consideration the animal taking a dump etc or what would happen if i needed to get it out. In the end we had a foul tempered jungle in a hide box that had a monstrous turd in it and a rat that he decided he wasnt going to eat rotting away. Not a good idea.

Hi Colin,
Whereabouts did you get those tubs? They look like a great idea to me for a high hide - which is a really good way to utilize available space.
Removable hides are the easiest way of getting a snake out of its enclosure, particularly for those of us with 'natural' settings with lots of rocks and branches. Another one that I use is a T-section for large drainage pipe.
Cheers,
Nic

Cheers,
Nic | I got the tubs at one of those $2 shops that you see around the place. There an instant favourite hide for every snake that has them from Jungles to Stimsons.
What I do when cleaning the enclosures (to stop from getting bitten) is when the Jungle python is inside the aboreal hide, I place a plastic plant dish over the hole that has some grey gaffer tape on it to cover the entrance hole. That way they stay inside the hide while I go about cleaning, changing water etc.
I've also used them to move snakes with the same method of blocking the entrance hole and slidinding some cardboard over the top before I slide out the tub. Its less stressful on the snake and me moving them that way, especially for Jungles with attitude.
The aluminium track is 1.5mm x 1.5mm x 1.6mm channel available from Bunning’s reasonably cheaply. I've found it holds the weight of the animal really well. That Atherton Jungle in the pic half out of the tub is over 7 foot long.

Hi Colin,
Can you please give me the approximate dimensions of the tubs?
Is there anything to stop you from mounting the tracks sideways, so that the tub would slide towards the front of the enclosure? Or do you think that the tracks need down the length of the tub for stability? The hole could still be in the same spot.
Thanks,
Nic
