How bad would this infuriate you guys???

North Carolina is one state I wont be going anywhere NEAR to live, that's for sure...

http://www.wcnc.com/news/local/stori....358374bf.html

I would FLIP out if I got a knock at the door because one of my neighbors had some irrational fear of a pet(s) I was keeping...

Thats the law. Your not allowed a snake that weighs in excess of 49.5 pounds there. It is no different to keeping crocs in Aus untill they reach 3 foot. As for the neighbours, alot of talk on here about calling the authorities when someone is keeping an illegal animal such as an exotic or keeping any animal for that matter in-appropriately. Maybe the cat owners should have started an online petition

RE: How bad would this infuriate you guys???

Why would they keep restraints against exotic animals and not average size dogs and such.
Dogs are a bigger liability then exotic pets ( not taking venomous species in account ) exotic pet owners don't go out onto the streets and bring their so called dangerous pets in contact with the public.
I'v seen a great deal more afflicted damage done by dogs and even cats than i did with exotic pets.
So i would call the law in this case rediculous and the people overreacting.

It says that the law states that you can't keep snakes bigger than 49.5 lbs. He broke the law. Currently dogs and cats are not illegal although some species are being banned and thus keeping them is illegal. Although we may think a law is stupid, the law is the law, he broke it so he suffered the consequences.

RE: How bad would this infuriate you guys???

Maybe they need to change the laws. So what do they do, they are allowed to get these breeds of snakes that can get much larger that the allowed size and when they get to big they take them off them. Then what happens to them. They probably dont have the facilities to house all the snakes they would have to confiscate so there for imo they would end up being destroyed. No wonder they have such a problem with pythons being released into the wild in the states. People have to remember that guy probably had that snake since a hatchy and now probably lost his best mate . I know i would be spewin!

I hear ya on the lawpart mate but i wasn't stating on illegality just pointing out the unusual . I mean , why would they forbid something that will prolly never get to the point of injuring a person due to the fact it just will not have as much possibillities as the most common pets ; meaning dogs and cats. That's why i stated that law as ridiculous not law itself ^__^

Certainly i find it a sad thing he didn't consider the possible consequences of keeping a snake that would be considered illegal . Specially since he will be best of but not the snake ( the snake is the victim here IMO cuz that will suffer the consequences of the owner )

That article reminds me about the time one of our diamonds escaped from the outdoor aviary (human error). We put fliers up in the area just so that there was less of a chance of someone hitting him over the head with a spade, and got really excited when someone rang asking us if we were the people who lost a snake.

Turned out to be a lady who gave us an earful about how she had saved up her life savings for a pedigreed cavalier king charles puppy and she thought that the snake was going to break into her house and eat it.

A law is a law...

But, then again, there are probably DOZENS of laws in the books that aren't enforced that we don't even know about, because they're unreasonable. Maybe they were applicable at the time they were written, but times have changed.

I know of one in California that says it's a misdemeanor to spit on the sidewalk- how often do you think that one is enforced?

The point about the dog is a great point. I don't care if you have a pit bull or a large doberman- with a bad attitude, and a single instance of it getting out can, and hasl wreaked more havoc than the number of large constrictors escaping and terrorizing the neighborhood!

RE: A law is a law...

My point exactly

The accidents concerning escaped so called dangerous snakes is wildly exaggerated, whilst the number of dog attacks is way higher but almost never spoken of and lawenforcement falling short in such cases.

There is nothing in the article to suggest that the cat owner reported him. The journalist simple asked the opinion of two of his neighbours and got two different responses.

Firstly, he may have bought the snake in another State where they have no size restrictions, then moved to North Carolina with it. It would be up to the owner to be aware of the law, and to take action when the snake exceeds the limit.
Secondly, the article states the snake has been relocated to Tennessee. Presumably they have different laws there, and the snake may be placed with someone and not destroyed.

It's a great shame when small minded neighbours think they know your buisness better than you do. it was obviously a much loved and well looked after snakie, and i feel very sorry for this guy, to lost your beloved baby due to stupid neighbours.
true the law states it was over size, but i for one would be mortified if it were me.

I've been talking to the owner in the story, and what really gets me is that the snake was nowhere near 90lbs- animal control weighed the green burmese at 67 pounds. Not only that, but the big guy was raised by this guy from a hatchling for the last 6 years, and there has never been a single problem- you gotta love how the media likes to sensationalize the story to make it that much better.

He also told me that the same day all this was going on, somebody's dog got loose and attacked a kid in the same county. It bit him 13 times, including in the head, causing him to be hospitalized. There was VERY little media coverage on that story- not even a 'news extra' about it.

Just goes to show you how the media can be 'selective' on what they decide to report on, depending on what they think will draw viewers...
