How do i get from mice to rats ??

My Diamond 3.5 years old wont take rats...I am having to give him three adult mice at a time.
I made him wait two weeks for a feed and tried rubbing the rat with mice and still nothing...
Any tips would be greatly appreciated...

Offer a mouse like you normally would and a rat of similar size at the same time.

I read this on a website (i havnt tried it though)

First start by feeding two Adult mice, one after the other. When your snake happily accepts this, thaw out one Adult mouse and one Hopper Rat for his next meal. Feed the mouse first, and when you get to the last big gulp to swallow the back legs of the mouse, place the head of the rat in the snake's mouth. Generally he will keep on eating as if its just a really long mouse.

Starve the snake of food for a while {a month or two} give it a mouse and then follow on by offering it a wet defrosted small rat. Make sure you rub the mouse all over the rat so that is smells like the mouse and see how you go. I have dome this with many of my snakes. Good luck and keep us updated as to how you go. Have you tried feeding your diamond quails? Your diamond may even go for that. Another food source could be a day old rabbit kitten.

There are number of things you can try and I'll add a few to what you already have here.. Let him go for a few weeks and try a rat that is really really warm. Another that I have had success with is using cotton string to tie a rat to a mouses A$$ tie the rats head in between the mouses back legs, a few times and most will just take a the rat when offered.. A chick will work well instead of the mouse.

Now this one I don't know why it works but seems to.. Hairless Rats they seem to like them for some reason.. Another Rat they will eat well are African Soft Fur rats, everything seems to love these guys. I have a WC female Emerald that I got in 94 who has never eaten a Rat who took the first Soft fur rat I offered her a few months back, go figure... Hope that helps some... Randy

I had this exact same problem with my diamond also. I tried everything and the only thing that I found to work was:
Defrost the adult mouse and a rat of same size together. Rub the mouse all over the rat. I had really long tongs (like bbq tongs) i put the rat in the tongs and put the mouse behind the rat. This way the rat was offered first but it smelt like mouse. My snake would then smell the rat then he would move up and smell the mouse. Because he couldn't get to the mouse without taking the rat he would take the rat.
I did this for about 4 months and now he just takes the rat.

Would he try and bite the tongs or go in sideways or anything like that?

I suppose you could feed mice forever...But i think size of food has some significance to deveopment of head size as well as it being easier and cheaper ....
